What knowledge and/or skills will I develop by undertaking the assessment?

This module will enable students to explore features of the contemporary hospitality industry and critically analyse the competitive environment in which the global hospitality business operates, to make informed decisions relating to its development and sustainability. This assessment is to examine the relationship between a set and series of data on a current industry trend. Success is measured by establishing the trend, acquiring all necessary data and analysing them by applying the relevant statistical concept, present the findings and transparently establishing the path to the final outcome of your analysis.

On successful completion of the assessment students will be able to achieve the following Learning Outcomes:

1. Critically analyse current trends and events in the hospitality sector.

2. Evaluate industry responses to social, economic, political and technological developments.

3. Perform statistical calculations and interpret the result with a thorough knowledge of the foundation metrics, definitions, formulas and methodologies used in the hotel industry.

4. Analyse performance reports and test against hotel benchmarking.

What is expected of me in this assessment?

Task(s) - Content

1. Explore how embracing trends affect a company’s performance (occupancy, RevPAR, or profit) in relation to a select group of competitors.

2. Identify and review existing research and literature to support the proposed relationship appropriately.

3. Define successful business performance and choose the correct methods to test the impact of on business performance.

4. Evaluation the positive and negative implications for the business and interpret the results considering their limitations.

· Presentation of Data - include calculations showing how the results have been obtained, include properly formatted and embedded tables and graphs in presentable, informative, and creative manner.

· Key Results - Summarize findings of a linear regression using scatter graphs and/or histograms. Discuss the results of the study that potentially provides evidence that responding and adapting to trends effects the business performance.

· Implications and Recommendations - Confirm that is instrumental for a business to adapt and implement your selected trend criteria. Explore potential benefits or disadvantages and indicate how this research can be further improved.

· References - List all references you used in your preparation of the Project including the preliminary literature review. All references must follow the RGU Harvard referencing system.

· Appendices - Income Statements and Balance Sheets of selected companies. Statistical Information pertaining to the selected trend.

Word Count

3000 Words +/-10% (excluding title page, table of content, introduction, reference list, tables and graphs). It is suggested that you balance your work approximately equally for the sections Theoretical Background (750 words), Data Collection, Measures and Presentation of Data (750 words), Key Results (750 words) and Recommendations (750 words).

Writing Format and Style

· Students are to clearly indicate which part of the assignment they were producing by stating the student name next to the Section Titles and Section Sub Titles.

· The written reports must be completed using Microsoft Word only.

· A signed declaration that the work is your own (apart from otherwise referenced acknowledgements) must be included after the title page of your assignment.

· Each page, except for the title page must be numbered.

· Assignments must be word-processed, spelled and grammar checked.

· Using the Century Gothic or Arial Font Style, Point Size 12 and 1.5 Line Spacing. The presentation should be of academic standard. The following are key considerations:

· Avoid use of unsubstantiated opinion; ground ideas in experience or reference accepted authorities or published research.

· Do not use colloquialisms or journalistic style.

· Minimize descriptive writing; instead, develop your analysis and argument by displaying thoroughness and rigor.

· Follow standards for referencing and acknowledging sources.

· Enhance titles and subtitles by underlining them or state them in bold.

· Tables, Graphs and Pictures are to be referenced and list of tables, graphs and pictures is to be included with a page reference after the table of contents.

· Tables, Graphs created are to be included in presentable fashion and ideally as embedded as ‘Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object’.

How will I be graded?

A grade will be provided for each criterion on the feedback grid which is specific to the assessment. The overall grade for the assessment will be calculated using the algorithm below.

At least 50% of the feedback grid to be at Grade A, at least 75% of the feedback grid to be at Grade B or better, and normally 100% of the feedback grid to be at Grade C or better.
