(1) Guidance for Students – Topic Selection, Scope and Expectations
In this assignment, you are required to produce a 2,000-word individual report (with a ±10% allowance; therefore submissions between 1,800 and 2,200 words will be accepted) that evaluates how a specific digital tool can support the development, growth or performance improvement of a small business (existing or proposed). The report should demonstrate your ability to analyse the digital environment, critically evaluate the value of a selected digital tool, and make justified recommendations based on evidence
(2) Purpose of the Report
The purpose of this assessment is to enable you to:
This report is not simply descriptive. You are expected to provide strategic, analytical and well-supported arguments based on theory, research, and real-world case examples.
(3) Choosing Your Report Topic
You must focus your report on at least one digital tool and analyse how it can support a chosen small business. You may select any type of small business (retail, hospitality, fashion, e-commerce, creative services, consultancy, fitness, education, etc.). The business you choose may be either a real, existing business or a hypothetical(fiction) one created for the purpose of this assignment. Both options are acceptable, provided that the business context is described clearly and enables you to evaluate the selected digital tool(s) in a meaningful and analytical way.
You may choose one of the example titles below or develop your own, as long as your report focuses on at least one clearly defined digital tool (e.g., CRM, AI chatbot, automation software, etc.) and provides a strategic, evidence-based evaluation of how the selected digital tool(s) can support the chosen business.
You may also base your report on one of the themes below (you may adapt the title).
These examples are provided purely for guidance, and you are not required to follow them. You should feel free to create your own title that is appropriate for your chosen business and the digital tool(s) you wish to evaluate.

The following table details the support you will be receiving for this assessment and the feedback opportunities you will have.
| Support and draft feedback sessions for Assessment 1 (Individual Report) |
|
Coursework briefing The assessment will be introduced during the Week 1 Interactive Large Class session, where an overview of the assignment will be provided. A detailed briefing will then take place during the Week 1 seminar, in which the assessment requirements, structure, marking criteria and expectations will be explained thoroughly. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and clarify any areas of uncertainty. Please refer to the Learning Planner for the exact dates and make sure you attend the briefing session, as it will support your successful completion of the coursework. |
|
Draft feedback opportunities You will have several opportunities to receive formative feedback on your progress before the final submission. In Week 4-5, you will be able to discuss your initial ideas and report structure with your tutor during the seminar. In Week 8-10, the seminar will include a focused feedback session where you can present a brief outline or partial draft for verbal formative feedback. Additional clarification or feedback may also be sought during office hours or via email, depending on your needs. Please ensure you engage with these opportunities, as formative feedback is designed to guide and support you in preparing your summative assessment. |
|
Additional support You are strongly encouraged to make use of the wider academic support available at the University. The Learning Enhancement Team (LET) offers workshops on topics such as academic writing, critical thinking, integrating sources, report writing and referencing. Tthese are highly recommended. In addition, Student Learning Assistants (SLAs) or Graduate Academic Assistants (GAAs) may be available to support you with tasks such as understanding assignment instructions, structuring your report, improving clarity in writing, and navigating academic conventions. |
For this assessment, your group must produce a 10-minute reflective video presentation that critically examines how your understanding of the digital business environment has evolved throughout the module.
The focus of this assessment is not on evaluating a specific digital tool, but on reflecting on your learning journey, changes in thinking, and the development of your digital mindset as emerging business practitioners.
Your video should demonstrate how key concepts, frameworks, and discussions from across the module have shaped your understanding of digital business environments and how this learning would influence your future decision-making in professional contexts.
Your video must be analytical and application-focused, rather than a simple summary of weekly content.

Ø Reflect critically on how your understanding of the digital business environment has developed throughout the module (LO1, LO3).
Ø Demonstrate changes in your thinking, perspective, and professional judgement as a result of engaging with digital business concepts (LO4).

b. Changes in Thinking and Professional Perspective
Reflect on how your assumptions, mindset, or approach to business decisionmaking have changed as a result of the module. Consider what you understand differently now compared to the beginning of the course.
c. Implications for Future Business Practice
Discuss how this learning would shape your future decisions as a business practitioner. This may include how you would approach digital strategy, tool adoption, risk management, ethics, sustainability, or organisational change in real-world business contexts.
d. Reflective Group Insight
Reflect on what you learned through group collaboration and shared discussion, and how this contributed to your overall learning experience.
(4) Suggested Themes and Possible Angles
The following themes are provided for guidance only:

(5) Practical Production Guidance
Your video may take any of the following acceptable formats:
Ø Slide deck with voiceover (PowerPoint, Canva, Google Slides)
Ø Screen-recorded presentation
Ø Edited group discussion
Ø Mixed-media digital presentation
Professional editing is not required. Clear audio, logical structure and readable visuals are sufficient.
Recommended tools include: PowerPoint Recorder, Canva Video, Zoom, Microsoft Stream or OneDrive.
Groups will be allocated during the seminar sessions and announced to students in due course.
The completed video should be uploaded to YouTube, and the final submission must be made by providing the YouTube link to the uploaded video.
All group members should contribute verbally or visually in some form, and a list of all group members along with their individual roles must be submitted together with the video file.
(6) Expectations and Academic Guidance
To achieve a strong grade, your video should demonstrate:
Ø Clear and coherent reflective communication
Ø Evidence of meaningful learning and changes in thinking
Ø Integration of concepts from across the module
Ø Insightful discussion of how learning informs future professional practice
