Module Introduction

As the world becomes more and more uncertain and unstable, designing repeated processes becomes less and less beneficial. This module provides the knowledge required for project managers to understand strategic management and how projects contribute to and deliver the strategy of an organisation. The business world today is substantially different and even more complex than it was in previous years. Organisations are required to continuously find innovative ways to compete in the changing global business environment.

This module will address the ethical decision-making abilities of students and provide critical context around international social issues raised by rapid technological change. Learners will develop an understanding of business purpose and strategy development, recognise business environment change, understand the concept of having a sustainable competitive advantage and raise critical awareness around the importance of stakeholder management in the context of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility.

Module Expectations

The module comprises 35 hours of timetabled contact, across the course of 10 weeks (11 including the study week). Contact takes the form of weekly lectures and seminars (for more details, please refer to the scheme of work), for which attendance and engagement are compulsory.

To develop in this subject and your wider programme, you are required to take part in all taught sessions, including recommended reading, directed and personal research, as well as course-related activities. The additional directed reading, case study-related tasks, exercises, and activities form part of the process of providing you with formative feedback in preparation for your graded assessments. You should expect to commit at least 65 hours of guided study to this throughout the 10/to 11-week delivery.

In addition to this, you will need to complete at least 100 hours of independent study, related to your assessments. This comprises self-directed research, reading and working with your peers to develop holistically as a critical, reflective marketing practitioner.

Academic Integrity

The University is committed to developing a culture of academic integrity and to conducting fair and equitable assessment for all students. Academic integrity involves a commitment to the core values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility in all academic endeavours. Individuals sometimes fail to act with academic integrity in an attempt to gain an unfair advantage in an assessment. This is often termed academic misconduct, and it will be dealt with by the University under the Code of Practice for Assessment and Academic Related Matters - Academic Misconduct Policy.

Student Responsibility

It is your responsibility as a student to develop good academic practice by taking part in sessions provided by Lecturers and Librarians. Good academic practice involves you improving your note-making and writing skills, being motivated to direct your studies, seeking advice if in doubt and acknowledging the sources used by referencing correctly.

You are encouraged to show the results of your reading by referring to and quoting from works on your subject, but you must make it clear which work is yours and which has come from elsewhere, through the use of appropriate referencing as well as in-text citations. You should take particular care not to copy a third party's summary or paraphrase of an author's work.

When you submit assessed work, you will be asked to confirm it is your own.

It is your responsibility to access the support provided by the University to help you develop good study skills. Some examples of the support the University provides include:

Potential Consequences

Being accused of academic misconduct is a serious offence in the University and has the potential to result in several penalties depending on the stage a student is at in their studies. It can mean that the student is required to resubmit the work; it may mean that the student is given a capped mark, or that the student is asked to resubmit for credits only and with a mark of zero; in the most serious cases, a student's studies may be terminated. If required to resubmit work, the student must pay the resit fee.
