You are required to identify a current public health related research issue in an area of personal or professional interest and write a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 words in length, excluding references, bibliography, and appendices (choose one):
The dissertation provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and abilities you have acquired during the taught element of the degree to develop a substantial research project. You will be expected to draw upon your knowledge and understanding of public health to provide a clear and detailed rationale for your chosen research topic which demonstrates a critical appreciation of relevant literature that has been identified by a systematic and sustained search process.
You will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of a research method appropriate to your research aims and objectives and show the skills necessary to undertake ethically compliant research to produce insightful results that are well organised and clearly presented. The discussion of your results should involve a synthesis of your findings with the existing literature and research to demonstrate the fulfilment of your research aims and to provide a critical understanding of their wider policy and practical implications.
The Unit Information Form states the Threshold Expectations that inform both you and markers what is the minimum needed to be demonstrated to pass the assessment. They should, therefore, answer the question "What do I need to do pass?”. During the assessment introductory session, you should be given the opportunity to check your understanding of the threshold statements and what you need to do to surpass them.
The assessment marking criteria listed below show how your work is assessed. The assessment criteria are informed by the unit’s learning outcomes and the assessment task. Carefully reading the assessment criteria should help you understand the aspects that will be used to judge your progress and achievement of the learning outcomes and offer guidance on “how do I achieve a good grade”.

You will be supported by an assigned supervisor, and where appropriate, workshops on data analysis for your specific research methodology.
The dissertation utilises the knowledge and understanding you gained of research methods in the Public Health Research Methods (PUB016-6) unit. It will also provide you with an opportunity to use and advance the skills you have gained in searching for literature and other relevant resources. More broadly, the dissertation will draw upon the knowledge and understanding of public health gained from all the taught units.
