What am I required to do in this assignment?

You are required to identify a current public health related research issue in an area of personal or professional interest and write a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 words in length, excluding references, bibliography, and appendices (choose one):

Primary study (quantitative or qualitative live projects)

The dissertation provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and abilities you have acquired during the taught element of the degree to develop a substantial research project. You will be expected to draw upon your knowledge and understanding of public health to provide a clear and detailed rationale for your chosen research topic which demonstrates a critical appreciation of relevant literature that has been identified by a systematic and sustained search process.

You will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of a research method appropriate to your research aims and objectives and show the skills necessary to undertake ethically compliant research to produce insightful results that are well organised and clearly presented. The discussion of your results should involve a synthesis of your findings with the existing literature and research to demonstrate the fulfilment of your research aims and to provide a critical understanding of their wider policy and practical implications.

What do I need to do to pass? How do I achieve a good grade?

The Unit Information Form states the Threshold Expectations that inform both you and markers what is the minimum needed to be demonstrated to pass the assessment. They should, therefore, answer the question "What do I need to do pass?”. During the assessment introductory session, you should be given the opportunity to check your understanding of the threshold statements and what you need to do to surpass them.

The assessment marking criteria listed below show how your work is assessed. The assessment criteria are informed by the unit’s learning outcomes and the assessment task. Carefully reading the assessment criteria should help you understand the aspects that will be used to judge your progress and achievement of the learning outcomes and offer guidance on “how do I achieve a good grade”.

Primary Study and Review

Synthesis of theoretical concepts, background literature, critically appraise empirical research, and relevant policy to provide an expanded reasoned justification for the chosen topic.
Ability to formulate and clearly articulate and justify a research question. The question should be based on a comprehensive and critical understanding of the Knowledge base surrounding the aspect of practice-based. Systematic and critical justification for, and discussion of the research design and the methods used. This includes critical discussion around design, sampling, and data collection methods.
Ability to formulate and clearly articulate a focused question (using PICO/PIO/PEO or similar frameworks).
Systematic and critical justification for, and discussion of the research methodology used. This critical discussion should include details of the search strategy, selection process, quality assessments, and data extraction stages, data analysis and interpretation.
Critical discussion of the strengths and limitations of research design.
Presentation and referencing of the dissertation using an appropriate format that is in line with UoB/School guidelines and L7 standards for presentation, referencing, and academic writing.
Adherence to the school ethics – confidentiality and consent policy (for primary studies only).

Health Service Development or Service Evaluation

Synthesis and analysis of theoretical concepts, background literature about the principles or approaches of public health service development and evaluation of impact of public health services on global population health outcomes (i.e., access,
utilisation, satisfaction)
Ability to use frameworks to formulate expected outcomes and key questions around which service development and evaluations can be planned and implemented.
Critically justify and evaluate effectiveness of evidence-based public health service interventions or approaches in the development and evaluation of public health services.
Develop detailed project implementation plans (relating to budgetary commitments, the scheduling of activities etc.) using a log-frame in structuring health development interventions and evaluation.
Develop coherent strategies for the monitoring and evaluation of projects, and the management of project staff, in a manner aligned with project objectives and environmental constraints.
Understand the ethical considerations in public health service development and evaluation and analyse the role of stakeholders in public health service development and evaluation.

Scientific Research Article

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the importance of scholarly writing in the field of public health and develop awareness of authorship(s) and intellectual property.
Demonstrate proficiency in conducting literature reviews to inform public health writing and critically appraise and synthesise existing literature to support arguments in public health writing to effectively communicate public health research for knowledge dissemination to target audiences.
Develop emergent, independent expertise in public health research and articulate professional, theoretical, and methodological debates in public health knowledge and research.
Create a well-structured and coherent manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal based on author guidelines.

You will be supported by an assigned supervisor, and where appropriate, workshops on data analysis for your specific research methodology.
The dissertation utilises the knowledge and understanding you gained of research methods in the Public Health Research Methods (PUB016-6) unit. It will also provide you with an opportunity to use and advance the skills you have gained in searching for literature and other relevant resources. More broadly, the dissertation will draw upon the knowledge and understanding of public health gained from all the taught units.
