Module Aims

This module prepares students for the successful execution of independent research projects by developing the skills required to evaluate extant academic literature, identify appropriate research needs/gaps, and subsequently plan, conduct, and present their research using styles that are
appropriate for formal academic presentations. The module covers key skills relating to academic writing, literature review, research methods, design, approaches, and structures for effective communication of research outputs, following standard ethical guidelines. As part of the module, you
will investigate and appraise current practice, theory, or policy analytically and critically. This will be an opportunity to integrate material covered in specialist modules while also applying the research skills acquired in this module.

Module Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, the students would:

  • LO1 Gain the skills needed to design, conduct, and present research projects using a formal academic writing style that is appropriate for postgraduate research.
  • LO2 Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to find, understand, and evaluate research reports published by others as a way of underpinning and justifying further research needs.
  • LO3 Evaluate various research methodologies and design/apply, with justification, a methodological approach that is appropriate to appropriate research under consideration within the limit of ethical guidelines.
  • LO4 Develop a research proposal, underpinned by well-established research needs and synthesis of extant literature, with an adequately planned and realistic timeline.
  • LO5: Collect, analyze, and synthesize evidence and/or data using appropriate techniques and instruments.
  • LO6 Present and communicate research outcomes, drawing conclusions and/or recommendations using language and styles appropriate for academic dissemination.
