Aims

The international hospitality and event environment has become increasingly competitive especially with deregulation, the introduction of new technologies and the rise of the new emerging economies. There are some key issues at present in the global hospitality and event industry and successful businesses anticipate and recognise both current and up-and-coming trends in order to survive and flourish. The global recession onwards and the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in a large shift in the ownership configuration within hospitality and event. Intense competition has also led to greater emphasis on customer expectation and the resultant quality of service delivery.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

On completion of this module, the successful student should be able to:

  1. Interpret a range of contemporary issues facing international hospitality and event organisations.
  2. Synthesise knowledge of the key contemporary issues, and their inter-relationship in the context of hospitality and event management.
  3. Critically evaluate the impacts of contemporary issues upon international hospitality and event businesses.
  4. Critically evaluate strategies for sustainable development for hospitality and event organisations.

Skills

This module should call for the successful student to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Review and analyse key relevant literature and apply academic knowledge and research to real-world contexts;
  2. Undertake in-depth research utilising both primary and secondary sources;
  3. Develop problem solving skills and group work management skills.

Assessment

Formative assessment: Formative assessment is completed during your year of study and provides the opportunity for immediate evidence for student learning. Classroom assessment is one of the most common formative assessment techniques. The reason why we use formative assessment is to help show you and us that you are learning and understanding the material covered in this course and allows us to monitor the progress being made towards achieving learning outcomes.

The point is to ensure that students have met the learning outcomes for the course and are at the appropriate level. It is the summative assessment that determines the grade that you are awarded for the module.

Assessment 1 Group presentation

Assignment structure, format and details

  • In groups of 3 or 4, students will design and deliver a presentation that provides a systematic evaluation of one of the two semester 1 industry engagement sessions (visit to the ‘Taste of Memory’ Exhibition/Festival, or the visit to Da Longyi Hotpot Restaurant, 5a Berners St, London W1T 3LA

Students are required to:

  • Engage with the Objectives of the visit: where these clearly articulated? How did these relate to the overall aims of the module?
  • Provide a brief summary of the actual visit experience: was the session wellstructured/managed? Were presenters/contributors able to effectively communicate their message? Were there opportunities for inter-action between presenters/contributors and attendees?
  • Apply a relevant Experiential Learning Framework in order to present a systematic account of what was learned during the visit
  • Offer a balanced, evidence-based set of recommendations in terms of how the visit could be changed/improved to offer a better student learning experience
  • Support key points with appropriate academic references

Assessment criteria

  • Structure/flow/balance of contributions (20%)
  • Detail, relevance, accuracy (20%)
  • Systematic reflection on the learning experience including the application of a relevant model of Experiential Learning (20%)
  • Delivery (clarity, audience engagement) (20%)
  • Slides (clarity, impact, correct referencing of information) AND time management (20%)

Assessment 2 Individual essay

Assignment Structure and format: Choose only one topic from the 2 listed here:

  • Annual food events for migrant workers: Innovative approaches
  • Discuss the challenges faced by migrant workers in the UK restaurant industry, focusing on issues such as labour conditions, cultural integration, and economic opportunities.
  • Explore how promoting annual food events can serve as a platform to raise these workers’ voices.
  • Analyse strategies to enhance the visibility of migrant workers in the industry, encourage collaboration among restaurateurs, and strengthen the ethnic food industry in the UK.
  • Include one event venue design and food event activities
  • Sustainability audit for a medium sized music festival
  • Discuss the main sustainability challenges faced by the organisers of a medium sized music festival focusing on issues including transport, energy use, staff recruitment and renumeration, waste management, noise pollution and wider community impacts
  • Briefly summarise how key sustainability ‘messaging’ would be incorporated in a creative, targeted marketing campaign to promote the festival
  • Explore how organisers could strike an appropriate balance between a genuine commitment to sustainability principles and commercial objectives, identifying the more significant challenges that this would involve
