BRM5007 Task/Assessment Brief:

You are required to take your learning out of the classroom and into real-world settings, away from purely theoretical studies. Engaging with some work experience will help you to familiarise yourselves with the work environment (in person, volunteering, hybrid or virtual placements) and actively develop your transferable skills but also solidify your understanding of certain subjects, fields and industries; all of which aim to make your more employable in preparation for your future career. 

To complete this assessment, you must write an individual report, 2,400 words in length which includes all of the following criteria:

Cover Page

  • Ensure that you provide the following details on the first page of your written coursework: 
    Module code and module title, word count, student name and student number.

Contents page 

  • Headings need to be numbered
  • State the page numbers 

Introduction (300 words approx.)

  • Introduce the key areas of discussion in this report, the work placement organisation(s) and the sector in which they operate.

PART A (500 words approx.)

  • An overview of the organisation’s structure and its strengths and weaknesses of the organisation.
  • Make recommendations in addressing these weaknesses, linking to relevant organisational behaviour academic literature.

PART B (1400 words approx.)

  • Discuss a specific situation from your work placement using a reflective theory/model such as  Gibbs Reflective Cycle
  • Explain the transferable skills you have developed through your placement opportunity and how they will be useful to enhance your employability.

Conclusion – (200 words approx.)

  • A summary of the main aspects that were covered in parts A and B, the most important learning that you will take from this experience, and how it will help you going forward.

  • A list of references, using the Harvard referencing system, should be attached to the end of the report.

Attach the placement approval email that was sent by the Placement Officer.

Learning Outcomes Of BRM5007 

On the successful completion of this assessment, students should be able to:  

  • Analyse the organisation’s structure, determining strengths and weaknesses and reflecting upon the application of theory to work-based projects.
  • Evaluate their contribution to the organisation via the completion of a project or primary research.
  • Describe the skills gained through the work placement and their transferability to other employment, their programme of study and life situations. Produce a report reflecting upon the completion of a project or primary research, which also enables demonstration of the learning that has taken place throughout the work experience.

Other skills/attributes developed

This includes elements of the Cardiff Met EDGE (Ethical, Digital, Global and Entrepreneurial skills) and other attributes developed in students through the completion of the module and assessment. These will also be highlighted in the module guidance, which should be read by all students completing the module. Assessments are not just a way of auditing student knowledge.
