York St John brings together the functional aspects of business and offers a wide range of programmes that meet the requirements of postgraduate and work-based learners. The campus contains academics with a range of experiences, from working with large multinational businesses through to working with social enterprises, SME's and 3rd sector organisations. Within York St John, a strong focus is upon student experience, as whilst we feel it is important that students are taught relevant technology, such as the ability and confidence to learn new programming languages and technology platforms, to communicate effectively and work in teams and to think logically and solve problems. This Handbook is a guide to that process.
The purpose of the Handbook is to provide some useful information about the Programme throughout your studies: the general aims and objectives; what we expect from you, what you can expect from us and how it all works. You will find further information relating to your University career on the student homepage. Any other questions can be addressed in the first instance by your tutor, whom you will get to know in the first few days. Feel free to consult us if you are in doubt about any procedures or if there are any other issues and concerns about which you need advice.

How do Lecturers get in touch with a student?
E-mail: All Students have a University email account. If your tutor needs to contact you, they will usually do it by e-mail, so you must check it very regularly-ideally daily.
Moodle: We may contact you using the announcement tool on Moodle, which sends a message to your YSJ email address.
During Classes: Tutors on the modules that you are following may well give general information as well as module-specific information. If you are unable to attend a class for any reason, it is your responsibility to let the administration team know using the absence form Reporting absence form beforehand if possible, and it is your responsibility as well to make sure that you find out what you have missed.
Phone: Staff needs to have current phone numbers, including mobile phone numbers, in case we need to contact you urgently. Please make sure your details are kept up to date on e-vision, the student records system, by logging in with your YSJ username and password and updating your details.
Post: Occasionally we will contact you by post, to both your term time and home addresses. Again, please make sure that your details are kept up to date.
How do students get in touch with a Lecturer?
By phone or University e-mail and contacting the lecturer directly. Admin Offices, etc., have copies of the internal telephone directory. A list of key numbers is also included at the back of this booklet. Module handbooks will contain information about how to contact module tutors.

During Classes: Time and circumstance permitting, it may be possible to have a brief word with the lecturer at the beginning or end of a session. This may not always be possible. If you need a longer time to discuss something with the lecturer, you can book a time to see your tutor via the Tutorial Booker. See below.
Lecturers' Offices: Most tutors use the Tutorial Booker, which is available via Moodle, or the student homepage or email directly.

The London campus has put in place measures to effectively monitor students, which will help to identify when a student may be encountering difficulties or may have circumstances that are preventing them from fully engaging, so the appropriate intervention mechanisms can be deployed swiftly.
Student support and module leaders are responsible for monitoring with support from the programme leader. If attendance is low and issues become clear, an action plan will be drawn up by the module leader and student services team. Module leaders are responsible for monitoring engagement with support from the student support team and programme leader. The mechanisms for monitoring engagement are as follows:
There will be formal assessment of each module requiring you to present work for marking, usually by tutors on the module. Make sure that you understand exactly what is required of you and that you know when and where to submit the work. It is the tutor's responsibility to make sure that these requirements are clearly presented and explained. It is your responsibility to make sure that you comply with these
requirements and deadlines. Most work will be submitted to an assignment dropbox on Moodle. Your feedback and grades will normally be made available through Moodle.
If you do not meet a deadline, there are University regulations which apply to late submission, and tutors must apply these equally to all students to ensure fairness.
If you hand work in after the tutor's submission date, without an extension, you will receive a mark capped mark of 50 (assuming it is pass standard) if submitted within a week of the deadline date. If you hand in more than a week late, or do not hand in a piece of work at all, you will get 0 for it. You should note that modules require you to pass or achieve a mark of more than 20 in all pieces of assessment, so you could risk failing a module by not submitting one of its assignments.
If you submit no work by the Registrar's Deadline, you risk having to repeat the module (at your expense). Before you will be allowed to progress to your next academic year (this may mean taking a year out) or termination of your programme.
If you are ill or have other difficulties, you must inform your module tutor and the Course Leader and ensure that all the relevant documentation is submitted. In particular, if there are any circumstances that you want the examiners to be aware of, you must complete an Exceptional Circumstances Form and submit that to the Admin Office responsible for the relevant module(s).
Please note also that dates set for class tests and oral presentations (whether individual or group presentations) represent deadlines too, and the same regulations apply to them (see above). However, it is particularly problematic for everyone involved if you are absent on these dates. It is not possible to change the date of class tests or exams to accommodate your personal circumstances.
You should present your work legibly, and in a form which the marker will find acceptable:
A sample of student work from each module you study will be moderated by a second member of staff, to ensure comparability of marking across modules. This sample will also be sent to an External Examiner - an academic at another university - to check that the marks awarded on your York St John University programme are broadly comparable with marks awarded at other universities.

We aim to release grades and feedback within three working weeks of your assignment deadline. Marks are unconfirmed until they have been through the university exam board, which takes place at the end of each semester.
