MAL7502-E Welcome and Introduction

Welcome to the MSc Dissertation module! The dissertation is a substantial piece of work that aims to help you develop your independent research skills with the support of a wider teaching team and a supervisor. The dissertation will be related to the theories, concepts and practical issues addressed in the taught course modules. We look forward to meeting you on this module!

This module will cover material related to the Dissertation for eleven weeks. There are 2 summative assessments, and given the nature of the Dissertation, supervision and guidance will be provided throughout the process.

Module Aims and Outcomes

To enable students to produce an original piece of research work related to the taught component of the programme that demonstrates a detailed knowledge and understanding of one or more areas of finance.

Module Learning Outcomes (LOs)

01. a) Define a focused research topic and specify research objectives and questions. b) Demonstrate an understanding of Research methods and the appropriate use of different research methodologies. c) Develop a research framework and Model

02. a) Demonstrate skills in both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques. b) Write a research proposal.

03. Have deepened their knowledge and understanding of a particular area of finance and understood how to undertake original research in this field

04. Demonstrate research skills in an area of finance. The subject-specific skills acquired will depend on the topic of the dissertation.

05. Demonstrate skills in self-management and motivation. 
Have developed skills in one or more of the following areas: mathematics, statistical analysis, computation, data cleaning and analysis, and primary data collection. Have developed skills in synthesising an existing body of research. Have developed the ability to communicate research findings.

Literature Review: conceptualisation, models, Research 

Alignment & Design Research Methodology (I) - Qualitative Methods

Research Methodology (II) - Quantitative methods

Research Proposal/Ethics Analysis – Qualitative methods Content analysis

Learning and Teaching on this Module

This is the final element of the Master's degree, and students determine the specific subject area of investment or financial management that they want to focus on for their dissertation/project. As such, it furthers students' knowledge and skills in the subject areas that are chosen by the students. Lectures and seminars relating to research methods and skills are provided, including workshops for all students at the Faculty level as well as on the City campus. The LTA strategy is designed to achieve independent learning and advanced knowledge and skills that are unique to each student according to their aspiration. The trainings are provided by lectures and practical work, both individual and group.This addresses Learning Outcome of 1a, 1b & 2a, 2b, 3, 4 and 5.


Research proposal of 3000 words, which is also included in the dissertation as an appendix. Maximum 12,000-word dissertation including literature review, methodology, data description, analysis, results and conclusion; but excluding references and appendices. The dissertation will also include the original research proposal (as an appendix). Supplementary assessment for the 20% will be a reflective account up to 3000 equivalent words.

Academic Misconduct

As a student, you are expected to complete all work independently and honestly, using an appropriate academic style. Failure to do so may result in penalties for academic misconduct.

Extenuating Circumstances and Extension

During your studies, you might face circumstances that impact or extenuate your ability to attend learning sessions, complete assessments, or perform at your expected level. This might include, for example, serious illness like Covid-19, or personal issues such as bereavement.

It is important that you tell someone at the University as soon as you can about any such issues so you can get the advice and support you need. As soon as an issue arises, let your Module Tutor and your Academic Tutor know. They will then determine how best to support you.

Support before an assessment deadline might include:

  • Having additional support sessions to help you with your assignment.
  • Involving other services with your permission, such as study skills support or counselling.
  • Offering you the opportunity to request an extension to the assignment deadline by completing an Extension Form (available from the Extenuating Circumstances information site).

Include evidence of your circumstances, such as a doctor's note, and submit the form well in advance of the date of the assessment you are unable to attend or complete. This will then be reviewed by a Faculty panel, and you will receive email updates about the status of your request and whether it has been accepted.

If it is impossible to let anyone know about your circumstances before the assessment date or assignment deadline, let your Module Tutor and Personal Academic Tutor know as soon as you can afterwards. In this scenario, you should also complete an Extenuating Circumstances form online via your e: Vision account. You should submit this online form no later than 7 days after your assessment was due to take place.
