ES97N Project Dissertation 

Briefing for the Written Final Technical Report (60% of the project)

Description:

Your individual project is a key element of your MSc, as described in the Project Handbook. The central expectation of the ES97N project is:

To demonstrate that the student has independently contributed primary data and/or a new analysis of secondary data, within their chosen advanced research topic. Projects will be highly variable in nature to reflect the range of topics within the programmes of study, but all will provide students with an opportunity to achieve the learning outcomes. Thus, projects may entail experimentation, modelling, analysis and literary survey skills to develop advanced skills in the discovery and occasionally creation of new knowledge. The module also offers the chance for students to pursue curiosity-driven work guided by an academic supervisor.

It is not an expectation of an MSc project that the work leads to new results or that the results are worthy of publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The project must, however, involve sufficiently advanced-level methods and techniques that are appropriately applied. Students should conduct a detailed analysis of the results and draw valid conclusions. A detailed understanding of the methods/techniques must be in evidence from the dissertation.

The final written technical report is the main component for assessing the ES97N module. The Project Handbook provides detailed information about the dissertation format.

Assessment:

The evaluated learning outcomes are:

1. Display enhanced knowledge and understanding of scientific principles of the engineering topic of their individual project. [M1, M2]

7. Demonstrate experience of working effectively both as an individual and within the context of a team with supervisor, taking responsibility for evaluating performance. [M16]

Three academics are involved in the assessment process. These usually are your supervisor (first assessor), a second assessor (another academic with knowledge of the topic and project supervision) and a moderator (a member of the School of Engineering). Double-blind marking is used as the moderating process.

The two Assessors mark the submission independently of each other, and you should keep this in mind when writing your dissertation, i.e. you should not assume the reader is as familiar with your project as your Supervisor is.

The two Assessors mark out of 100. The overall mark from each Assessor is equal to the sum of marks allocated to several different components as described in the marking scheme. Before the viva, both assessors will have read and marked the dissertation.

The Moderator's main task is to independently combine the Assessors’ marks to achieve a mark that fairly and accurately reflects your performance. This mark is then agreed and recorded (which may be an average).

Marking Scheme

Each criterion is marked out of 100%, with the relative weight in the final mark below.

  • Component 3. Argumentation and Discussion of Findings 30 marks
  • Component 4. Conclusions and Future Work 10 marks
  • Component 5. Presentation and layout of dissertation: 10 marks.
