This module has been developed to help you carry out your own dissertation in an area of your choosing. This choice may be based on future career aspirations, previous experience and expertise, or equally, just because you are passionate about a particular research question.
However, your dissertation should be driven by a goal to contribute in a meaningful way to the current knowledge base within a specific area of interest to you.
This module provides the opportunity to work closely with and be supported by an expert member of staff on a one-to-one or small group basis to help carry out your dissertation ideas. This module will enable you to put into practice many of the competencies gained throughout your Master's across a range of disciplines, e.g. subject subject-specific expertise, as well as more transferable skills such as critical thinking or being able to disseminate findings effectively to academics and/or practitioners. Completion of your dissertation should provide you with an in-depth understanding of the current evidence base within an area of your choosing, pertinent to the field of sports science.
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Notational Learning Hours: This module is made up of approximately 600hrs of combined supervisory meetings and independent study. We would advise scheduling weekly meetings with your supervisor, where you will work closely with this member of staff to develop your dissertation. It is completely down to you to maintain contact with your supervisor and coordinate these meetings. Independent study will consist of reading, researching and academic writing.
Feedback Opportunities: Multiple feedback opportunities will be available. For example, one-to-one tutorial support is available via supervisor office sign-up sheets as well as with the module leader where helpful. You are encouraged to submit one (maximum) draft copy of your written dissertation for your supervisor to provide written or verbal feedback on, but please ensure they are given adequate time to turn this around.

You will be required to complete a 10-minute verbal PowerPoint presentation in line with your preferences/skills. This should be developed to disseminate an overview of your dissertation and key findings/conclusions to applied practitioners. You should include all relevant implications and applications in line with your findings. 50% of the marks will be awarded for content and 50% for presentation.
The deadline for this assessment will be Monday, 2nd September 9 am 2024. The PowerPoint presentation will need to be submitted through turnitin in Blackboard. Please also remember you can check your Turnitin report for plagiarism, collusion, etc., yourself upon submission. Please ensure you leave enough time to make changes and resubmit if necessary, before the deadline.
Failure to submit by this date/time will result in penalties in accordance with University teaching and learning regulations, i.e. work may be submitted up to one week after a deadline, but will be capped at 50% for PGT modules and 0% thereafter, unless extension requests have been approved via the MyBangor Request Centre.

You will be required to complete a written dissertation incorporating a research question/dissertation aim, a critical appraisal of relevant literature, an outline of an appropriate methodological approach, main conclusions and key implications/application.

Your supervisor may pre-mark one draft of all sections of the Dissertation except the Discussion section. It is your responsibility to arrange with your supervisor a submission date for the draft. This should be at least approximately 4 weeks from the due date, so that the supervisor has 2 weeks to mark the draft, and you have 2 weeks to incorporate feedback. |
