This assessment has three parts, which are outlined below:
This part of the TMA requires you to provide short answers (approximately 50 words per answer) to the following four questions.
1. With reference to ONE of the national sports councils (e.g. Sport England, Sport Scotland, Sport Wales and Sport N.I.) describe its main functions.
2. Describe the different types of organisations that the national sports councils work alongside.
3. What involvement do the national sports councils have in funding different sports? 4. How is the role of the national sports councils different from that of UK Sport?
Data from the Active Lives Survey 2018-19 showed running to be the most popular sport in England. Describe three factors identified in the module materials that may contribute to high participation numbers in the activity of running compared to team sports.
By clearly referring to ideas and information in the module materials, discuss what factors have shaped your own participation (or non-participation) in sport and physical activity.
Parts 1, 2 and 3 must be submitted in one document.
As in all written assignments, you should support your answers with reference to the module materials and other credible sources. You should also use relevant supporting examples where appropriate. For guidance on referencing, refer to Section 5.2 of the Assessment Guide and the 'Develop your academic writing skills' section on the Sport and fitness website. For guidance on whether to write in the first or the third person see each individual guidance section, you can also find more help at the 'Writing for university' section on StudentHome. You should use subheadings to clearly identify the start of each task and you must remain within 10% of the overall word count.
Sections 5.5 and 5.6 and Activity 5.3 in the Study Guide may be useful for you to revisit before you begin to work on your answer.
This task requires you to provide short answers to the four questions stated in the assignment. You do not need to provide references for these answers but remember, you must not simply copy the information provided in the module materials, you should put your answers into your own words to show your understanding. These short answers should be written in the third person.
The whole of Section 6.4 (including sub-sections 6.4.1 and 6.4.2) and Activity 6.2 in the Study Guide may be useful for you to revisit before you begin to work on your answer, as well as ideas from Unit 4.
This task asks you to describe three factors that contribute to high participation numbers in the activity of running. As there are 300 words for this answer you should aim to spend approximately 100 words on each factor. This should include clearly stating each factor and describing why it may contribute to more people participating in running compared with team sports, supported by evidence from the module materials. Remember, you should provide a reference when you use information or facts from the module materials. This answer should be written in the third person.
Sections 7.2 and 7.6 and Activities 7.2 and 7.6 in the Study Guide may be useful for you to revisit before you begin to work on your answer.
This part of the assignment asks you to produce a short essay (1000 words). The structure of essay-style assignments is very open but generally includes an introduction, a main body and a conclusion. The guidance in the box below provides a useful structure and suggested content for your answer. However, as this is an essay format, the sub-headings below (or any other subheadings) should not be used in your answer. As this essay reflects on your own sports participation it should be written in the first person. This does not mean that it is not an academic piece of writing though, and you must explicitly reference ideas and information from the module materials to support your answer.
An introduction provides your reader with an overview of what your answer will cover and what you want to say. Your introduction for this assignment should:
The main body of your essay should present your argument, which in this case is what has influenced your sports participation. Each main point should have its own paragraph. You should use evidence to support the points you make in this section, referencing your sources appropriately. This means when you use the work of others, either from the module materials or other sources, that you make this clear to the reader. If you are still unsure about referencing visit the 'Develop your academic writing skills' page on the Sport and fitness website, which contains lots of information to help you.
The main body of this answer should discuss your current participation in sport and physical activity and clearly state the factors that you think have shaped your participation or non- participation. The
key factors discussed in Study Topic 2 were:
You should select which combination of these factors you feel are appropriate for your own participation and apply and discuss the ideas and evidence you have read about in Study Topic 2 (for example using fully referenced material from the Study Guide and Reader Chapter 5). The answer should explain how the factors you have identified have encouraged or hindered your participation.
The conclusion should sum up how your essay has answered the question. It should reinforce your introduction and refer to the wording of the question.
If your essay has presented evidence or data, ensure that the conclusions you draw are valid in the light of that evidence and data. Draw your conclusions cautiously; use phrases such as 'the evidence suggests that...', or 'one interpretation is that...', rather than 'this proves that....
Your conclusion should:
clearly state all of the sources used in your work in the reference list at the end of the TMA, providing full details of the material. For more information on how to reference, please refer to Section 5.2 of the Assessment Guide and the 'Develop your academic writing skills' section of the Sport and fitness website.
