DSAA204 Assessment Task: 

The assessment is about a design of a system using OOP. 

ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION : 

This assessment is an individual report about the design of an OOP system using Data Structures and Algorithms. The report should follow the following structure using the actual case study that will be available on Moodle (in assessment section) by week 8.

CASE STUDY: 

Optimizing Airline Ticket Reservation System Using Data Structures and Algorithms

An airline company is experiencing significant performance issues with its online ticket reservation system. Customers are complaining about slow seat availability checks, lengthy flight search times, and prolonged booking processes, especially during peak travel periods. Internally, the airline also struggles with optimizing flight schedules to maximize revenue and minimize operational costs. 

The current system relies on basic data structures and algorithms, leading to inefficiencies in data retrieval and processing. The company seeks to revamp its system by implementing more efficient data structures and algorithms to address these performance bottlenecks and provide a smoother user experience.

DSAA204 TASKS TO BE COMPLETED Given the above information: 

1. Decide the appropriate variables, keys and ranges to be used in the system. Justify. 
2. Identify the appropriate data structure to represent this this problem. 
3. Identify and describe the specific performance bottlenecks that are hindering the airline ticket reservation system. Propose suitable data structures and algorithms to address each of the identified bottlenecks (seat availability checks, flight search, booking process, and flight scheduling). 
4. Explain the rationale behind your choice of data structures and algorithms, justifying how they would improve the system's performance. 
5. Algorithms for the operations that your system should support. Also, justify the choice of algorithms. Propose the algorithms that would best solve the identified problems. Justify each algorithm's selection based on time complexity, space complexity, and real-world applicability. 
6. Discuss the scalability of the system and propose potential improvements to handle larger ticketing system. Discuss any modifications or enhancements that can be made to the proposed data structures and algorithms to better suit the company's evolving needs. 
7. Reflect on the challenges and limitations of the design and propose additional features or enhancements that could further improve reservation systems.

This Moodle Site is the location for Workbooks and information that are presented to Kent Students in the ALS Workshops conducted at the beginning of each Trimester.

Marks will be deducted for failure to adhere to the word count if this is specifically stated for the Assessment Task in the Unit Outline. Use of generative artificial intelligence tools are not permitted to be used for this assessment.
