MSc IHM L7 Research Methods Module Handbook Semester 2 | LBU

Published: 24 Jan, 2025
Category Research Proposal Subject Education
University Leeds Beckett University Module Title Research Methods

Module Aims

This module is designed to enable students to understand the process of conducting research and have the skills to undertake research in topics relating to the events, tourism, hospitality and allied sectors. They will also have the opportunity to identify, critique and apply appropriate subject-specific theories, methods and strategies for the investigation and solution of identified issues/problems.

Module Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Search, find and select a range of literature, identifying and critiquing relevant sources.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of philosophical debate and methodologies necessary for conducting research.
  • Display an understanding of available research designs and demonstrate how various methods can be used to collect, analyse and interpret data.

Your Report Assignment Aim:

  • What is research in general?
  • What is primary research?
  • What is secondary research?
  • In what ways are primary and secondary research similar?
  • In what ways are primary and secondary research different?
  • What are the strengths & weaknesses of primary and secondary research?
  • What are the advantages & disadvantages of primary and secondary research?

Module Learning Activities

Content will, as appropriate, be drawn from:

  • The research process and the format of a research proposal
  • Research philosophy and research approaches
  • Identifying topics and sourcing secondary data and literature
  • Critically reviewing the literature
  • Qualitative research data collection and analysis
  • Quantitative research data collection, sampling and analysis, including the use of appropriate software
  • Accounting for gender, cultural or other forms of bias in research
  • Research ethics
  • Research project planning and writing

The indicative learning activities include a series of lectures that will cover key themes of research methods at master’s level. This may be face to face or via online platforms, depending on the course and student circumstances. The students will apply these ideas to realistic problems of research in their academic area within the workshop sessions. The assessment activities will allow the students to demonstrate their abilities to review the research of others and plan and develop their projects.

Communication

We will communicate with you through MyBeckett. Please monitor MyBeckett and your student e-mail address for announcements.
You must notify your Course Administrator if you are absent for more than one day (for example, for an interview, emergency, unforeseen circumstances, or for compassionate leave).  If you are going to apply for mitigation, you will need to provide written evidence of the reason for your absence (see Extenuating Circumstances and Mitigation for further information).

Assessment 1 –Research Report- 100% of Module Marks

Research Report

“Write a report that critically compares and contrasts primary and secondary approaches to hospitality research”.

(maximum 6,000 words)

This report asks you to compare and contrast primary research and secondary research. This means you need to analyse their similarities and differences and evaluates them against each other. This doesn't mean just listing the characteristics and traits of primary and secondary research, but means going further by exploring the similarities and differences between them in detail.

Comparing and contrasting means identifying the similarities and differences between primary research and secondary research by judging them against one another on several important criteria.

Your report needs to focus on both the similarities and the differences between primary and secondary research.

This compare and contrast report should have sections focused on individual topics. It should begin with an introduction explaining the report's purpose and have a strong and clear conclusion that reveals your preference for your research project.

Your report should analyse and evaluate primary research and secondary research.

Analysis should involve the in-depth study of the structure content purpose, etc of PRIMARY & SECONDARY research projects to explain exactly what they are. The primary purpose of this analysis should be to explain the nature of exactly what primary research is and what secondary research is.

Evaluation should be the development of a judgment of the quality and usefulness of primary research against the quality and usefulness of secondary research. The main objective of the evaluation should be to develop a conclusion about the relative importance and usefulness of primary and secondary research.

The main difference between analysis and evaluation is that your evaluation should be a comparison; it should judge the two kinds of research against one another. Your analysis should be your in-depth study of what primary research is and what secondary research is. You should state in the conclusion which you would prefer to do for your research project.

Student Instructions for Submission of Coursework

This module requires you to submit your work online.

You MUST submit your work through MyBeckett using the link set up by the tutor. Receipt of your work will be recorded.

Your "Turnitin assignments" in MyBeckett can be set up so that you can check your assignment yourself as you submit it. This checking is done by creating a "Similarity Report".  If this report shows that there are some problems with your work, such as uncited quotations, you should be able to make corrections and resubmit the work before the due date.

Please note: Tutors will follow up on any suspected breach of academic integrity found after the submission date as per University policy. Late penalties will apply as per University Regulations.
