The present report aims to systematically implement the nine sentencing steps based on the formulated case of Paul Jones and his dangerous dog experience. This report will describe the offenders’ personal information and background, characterize the offence, and identify sentencing guidelines underlying this case. The defendant is 19-year-old Paul Jones, a self-employed painter and decorator and a volunteer in a local youth football team. According to Gratzer, sentencing guidelines are “systematically developed principles or rules for judges to follow when determining penal sanctions”. The primary purpose of sentencing guidelines is to achieve uniformity, fairness, and consistency in judicial decision-making. It is concluded that the given sentence to Paul Jones is marked by a balance between the severity of the offence, the defendant’s culpability, and the grave harm caused to the victims. The dog's prior history of aggression, the severity of the child's bodily and psychological damage, and Jones's early guilty plea that reduced his sentence are the main factors that supported the ruling.
