You are a legal advisor tasked with preparing a briefing paper for a Government Minister who is considering a review of the current law relating to the impact of privacy law on media reporting and open justice in the UK. The Minister is particularly concerned that existing restrictions on media reporting may not go far enough in protecting people’s right to privacy.

Your briefing paper must critically evaluate the legal framework governing reporting restrictions and open justice, including relevant statutory provisions, case law, and human rights principles. You must also assess how courts balance competing rights under Articles 6, 8, and 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and offer a balanced opinion whether current practices adequately protect both individual privacy and freedom of expression.
