Bitumen - also known as asphalt, is a black, sticky and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form. The pitch lake in southwest trinidad is the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world, estimated to contain 10 million tons. The vast majority of refined asphalt is used in the construction industry. Asphalt of different grades are produced as per industry needs. This is made either by refining or blending. It is estimated that the current world use of asphalt is approximately 102 million tonnes per year. About 85% of all asphalt produced is used as binder in asphalt concrete for pavement, airport runway, etc. A further 10% of global asphalt production is used in roofing as waterproofing qualities. The remaining 5% of asphalt is used mainly for sealing and insulating purposes.
