The IMAT1701 portfolio combines a network design report for a campus organisation called StudentHub with a two-page ethical analysis of a topical computing case, testing both technical networking knowledge and professional responsibility in computing.

Learning Outcomes Assessed

  • Demonstrate comprehension of the concepts and principles of computer systems and networks.
  • Analyse, evaluate and interpret existing ICT solutions and communicate design and deployment plans for new systems and networks.
  • Evaluate and interpret computer systems and network protocols and technologies.
  • Explain professional responsibility and accountability, the social implications of computing, computer ethics and basic computer-related law.
  • Communicate effectively about social and ethical issues in computing.

Unit 1: Scenario

You have been hired by “StudentHub”, a university campus organisation, to design a secure and scalable network for three computer labs on different floors of the same building. Students must access shared printers and file storage locally and remotely, the network will integrate cloud services for remote collaboration, and it must scale for future growth. The network must be secure with different access permissions; provide centralised printing and file storage; support an external storage device; let staff and students search campus teaching resources; have at least three users including a network administrator; support adding and removing users, password and access-right changes, login restrictions and account disabling; require usernames and passwords; and include utilities such as remote desktop, antivirus and firewall.

Unit 1: Tasks

Analysis and evaluation of computer networks

Evaluate and justify your network design in terms of logical topologies, data transmission media, strengths and constraints, user experience, reliability, availability and security, and performance.

Create the design

  • A short brief describing the purpose of the new network.
  • The network structure: networking components and their roles, how they connect and communicate, software resources (operating systems and applications), and the users and their roles.
  • A labelled network diagram showing devices, positioning, connection media, IP addresses and subnet masks, and how the network will be set up.
  • Justification of the final design against the stated purpose and user requirements.

Deliverables: a 4–6 page PDF technical report with design documentation (purpose and requirements, structure, diagram, set-up and configuration, justification).

Unit 2: Ethical Analysis Case Study

Choose one of three topical scenarios and: obtain the facts and any missing information; identify the ethical principles involved (such as honesty, fair play, proper compensation and privacy); and choose and justify an action that meets those principles, ranking principles where necessary. Deliverable: a 2-page PDF analysis report in the portfolio, assessed on professional responsibility, social implications of computing, basic computer law and effective communication.

Submission Checklist

  • One PDF with sections separating each assignment, title page, table of contents, numbered pages, each assignment on a new page.
  • Garamond 10pt; Harvard referencing with at least 10 references, 6 of them scholarly peer-reviewed articles.
  • Assessed against the portfolio rubric on LearningZone: understanding of the brief, strength and relevance of content, organisation, use of scholarly sources, grammar and portfolio quality.
