Assessment Brief

For assessment 2 you are asked to adopt the position of the hotel manager at The Grand. The HR consultant’s report has just been delivered and you are due to meet with the restaurant management team in a few weeks to discuss the next steps. You are aware that your approach to leadership will have an impact on employee’s reaction to the proposal to introduce a vegan and vegetarian menu. You therefore decide to spend some time reflecting on your own leadership style and the leadership style that will be most effective in bring about change.

Your report/recorded presentation should include the following elements:

1.A description of your own leadership identity. Within your description you should consider the following:
a.How your own culture and background has shaped your leadership identity.
b.How information shared, and reading carried out, during this module has impacted on your leadership identity. 

2.A diagrammatic representation of your leadership identity (please refer to the leadership seminars for help with this). The diagram can be hand drawn or produced on a computer.

3.An evaluation of two leadership theories that might be appropriate for bringing about change in the case study organisation. Please note the following:

  • You must use leadership theories that have been introduced to you in THIS MODULE ONLY. Please refer to the lectures and reading list delivered in Week 8, 10 and 11.
  • You must use at least one sustainable leadership theory from the Week 10 content.

When selecting theories for evaluation you should think about the following:

a.What leadership theory will be the most appropriate for bringing about a change focused on sustainability? 
b.What leadership theory will be most appropriate for addressing the challenges faced by The Grand as they make the proposed change. 

4.Based on the evaluation carried out for point 3, explain which leadership theory are you going to use and why. You should select ONE leadership theory, not a combination of theories. If you feel that the theory selected has its limitations, you should discuss these and consider how these limitations could be overcome.

5.Outline the skills that you will need to develop in order to carry out your leadership role and how these skills will be developed.

Assessment format

For the assessment, you are required to produce ONE of the following:

1.A 1500-word reflective report
2.A 10-minute recorded presentation. Your presentation should be produced using PowerPoint and should include PowerPoint slides and a recorded oral presentation. You can include as many slides as you like. 
Both options 1 and 2 will be assessed using the marking matrix provided in the ‘Assessment Overview’ section on Moodle.

It is entirely your choice whether to do a written report or a recorded presentation. One is not better than the other, and both will be marked using the same marking criteria.

When making your decision, consider:

  • Which format best suits your skills.
  • Which format will help you to develop skills relevant to future employment.
  • Which format you will most enjoy.

Approach to reflection

Note that this report is about reflecting for self-awareness. In your role as manager at The Grand your aim is to:

  • Develop self-awareness of your leadership practice (i.e. to learn about yourself in order to improve).
  • Identify leadership traits and values that are engrained and that you would like to maintain, and those that can change or that you would like to develop.
  • Challenge assumptions about leadership practice, and look for evidence that might challenge or support those assumption - ask yourself ‘How do I know?’ and ‘Why?’ 

The aim of the report is not therefore to reflect on experience using (for example) Gibbs reflective framework.

Word count and presentation length

Reflective report

The total word count for the reflective report can be found in the overview table at the start of this assessment brief. 

The word count stated does not include the cover page, title page, table of contents, reference lists, tables and diagrams, or appendices. Note that heading and in-text citations are included in the word count.
The word count is subject to a ±10% allowance to the allocated word count. Where a submission exceeds the stated word limit (allowing for the +10%), the maximum grade awarded will be 50%. 

Recorded presentation

The length of the recorded presentation can be found in the overview table at the start of this assessment brief. 
The length is subject to a ±10% allowance, i.e. your presentation can be up to 1 minute over or under the specified length. Where a submission exceeds the stated length (allowing for the +10%), the maximum grade awarded will be 50%.

Arrangements for submission

Your assessment should be submitted via the Turnitin submission link that can be located under the Assessment Submission and Feedback section on Moodle.
Your work must be submitted with the appropriate cover sheet which must confirm that the assignment is your own and has not been submitted for another assessment. You should include the cover sheet as page 1 of your submission.

Assessments MUST be submitted as either a word file (.doc/.docx) or a PDF file (.pdf). We will not be able to read any other file formats.

Please note that we have to mark what you submit. If you submit the wrong version of your coursework (for example, an incomplete version) this will have a negative impact on your grade. Please make sure that you clearly name the final version of your coursework, and double check that you have uploaded the correct version BEFORE submitting.

Recorded presentation

Recorded presentations MUST be submitted as a PowerPoint file (.ppt/.pptx). Please do not export your recorded PowerPoint to a video file.

Late submission

Assessments submitted late, but within 7 days of the deadline, will be capped at 50%. 
If you submit your assessment more than 7 days after the deadline you will be awarded a Fail. You will have a second opportunity to submit, however your grade for the module will be capped at 50% (a pass). This means that the maximum grade you will be able to get for this module will be a 50%, even if the quality of your work is higher than a pass.

What should I do if I don't think I can meet the assessment deadline

If you have any concerns about meeting the assessment deadline you can, in some circumstances, request an extension. All of the information you need can be found here: https://my.napier.ac.uk/your-studies/academic-issues/extenuating-circumstances 
To request an extension, please download and complete the RE1 form from the link above, and email it to the module leader.
Note that it takes time for us to confirm whether an extension has been granted or decline, so please avoid leaving extension request to the last minute. If you apply for an extension the day before the deadline we may not be able to approve it on time. Extension requests submitted after the deadline WILL NOT be considered.

Grading and feedback

Your work will be assessed against a series of marking criteria. These can be found under the ‘Assessment Overview’ section on Moodle. You will be awarded a percentage between 0 and 100% against each of the criterion. Your criterion grades will help you to understand where your strengths lie and the areas that you need to improve.
Using your criterion grades as a guide, the marker will then make a holistic assessment of the quality of your work, and award you an overall percentage.

In addition to receiving a grade, you will also be provided with written feedback on each criterion. You feedback will explain what you did well, and what you could have improved. It is essential that you engage with the feedback provided as this will help you to improve in future assessments, both in this module and in other modules that you are taking. 

Grades and feedback will be released 15 working days after the submission deadline.

Reflective report

A good piece of work is attractively styled and logically structured, with a high standard of written English.  The report should be written using British English spelling: avoid “z’s” such as “organization” and use the standard British English spelling of “organisation”, “behaviour”, “centre”, etc.

Use the report format and include appropriate headings. Do not label the body of your report as “main body” and do not use long questions as headings; instead, use descriptive headings which signpost the content of each section. A contents page should be included at the start of the report (please see guidance below).

Format your report using a professional font (e.g. Calibri or Arial), and use 1.5 line spacing. 
Appendices can be useful to provide additional information, but you must incorporate the key reflections and arguments into the main body of your report. Any appendices should be referred to in your report.

The slides

A good presentation is attractively styled and logically structured, with a high standard of written English. 

  • Avoid putting too much information on each slide. Use bullet points rather than block of text to covey the most important information. Remember that you presentation will be accompanied by a recorded oral presentation so you don’t need to cover all information in your slides.
  • Use a limited colour pallet, and ensure that coloured text is visible by using high contrast colours.
  • Use a professional font, such as Calibri or Arial, and ensure that your font is consistent throughout the presentation
  • Think carefully about the size of text. In general, avoid using text smaller that 18pt.
  • Include images to make you slide more attractive BUT only do so if the images are relevant and enhance the slides.

Please note that you should not save your presentation as a video. Please see the information in ‘File format and naming’.
Here are some tips that will help you to produce a clear oral presentation:

  • Write some notes, or a script. This will help you to create a clear and well-structured presentation that covers all the required information.
  • Speak clearly and take care not to speak too quickly. You may need to speak more slowly that you would when talking to a friend.
  • Record your presentation in a quiet location. Background noise can make the presentation difficult to hear; and if we can’t hear you, we have nothing to mark!
  • Listen back to your presentation. I know that this can be an uncomfortable experience, but it is important to ensure that your presentation is clear. 
  • Make sure that what you say in the recording and what you present on your slides match up!
  • As demonstrated in the video above, you can turn on your camera during the recording. Ideally, we would like you to have your camera on. This will make your presentation more engaging and will make your oral presentation easier to follow. However, you can record your oral presentation with the camera off if you prefer.

Use of literature and referencing 

You are strongly advised to support your statements with evidence, doing this via in-text citations and adding a list of references. There is no recommended number of references. You need to ensure that all arguments, ideas, definitions etc. are appropriately evidenced. Evidence should be gathered from academic and professional sources. Sources such as Wikipedia are not reliable and should not be used. You should not reference or quote from lecture or seminar slides, but should instead follow up on references provided in these slides. 

All the works cited must be referenced using the APA Referencing system. Please refer to guidance provided by the library. This can be located under the ‘Academic Brief and Information’ section on Moodle. 

Do not cut and paste phrases or paragraphs from published material without citing your sources. You should seek to use your own words to explain concepts and theories while acknowledging the work of other scholars through proper referencing, both in-text and in a reference list. Please refer to the University guidance notes on the avoidance of Plagiarism. This can be located under the ‘Academic Brief and Information’ section on Moodle.

Draft submissions to check your citing and referencing

You can submit a draft of your assessment to Turnitin prior to the deadline. This will allow you to check your similarity score in advance of your final submission. A high similarity score can leave you open to accusations of plagiarism.
