Note: If you have any valid mitigating circumstances that mean you cannot meet an assessment submission deadline and you wish to request an extension, you will need to apply online, via MyUCLan with your evidence before the deadline.

You will work with your module tutors to guide and advise you through your research and writing up.

Project: Fashion in the Frame: Fashion History Presentation and Written Report

This assessment is worth 100% of the overall module mark

Introduction:

Explore the concepts and theories in critical studies of fashion and textiles. Understand the significance of critical thinking in examining fashion and textile practices. Analyse the social, cultural, and environmental implications of fashion and textiles.

The Brief:

Choose a decade or a significant period relating to fashion from the 20th century and then research and produce a visually rich presentation. Your written script for your presentation is the written part of the submission. Research a variety of sources.

Your presentation should be 10 minutes long and no more than 20 slides
Written component (script) should be 1500 words
Submission 22nd April 2026

Preparation for Assessment

The weekly FO 1001 sessions throughout Semester 2 will guide you through key areas/decades to help you complete this assessment. You will be introduced to research methods and case studies evidencing interdisciplinary approaches that are relevant to fashion and textile research.

The aim is to inspire and inform your own assignment and creative development.

There will be opportunities for tutorial support throughout Semester 2 to review your progress, to ask questions and to aid you in the completion of this work. You should use the timetabled time on Fridays (outside of the core teaching hours of 1:30 pm-3:00 pm) to independently undertake and complete research, reading and written work.

Learning Outcomes

The following Learning Outcomes will be assessed for this assignment:

  • LO1 - Identify key themes in 20th-century style and culture.
  • LO2 - Recognise the relationship of design to historical, social, and cultural contexts.
  • LO3 - Apply critical skills in the analysis of relevant texts and sources relating to the study of design and culture.
  • LO4 - Conduct research and demonstrate its application to the development of creative skills.
  • LO5 - Verbally present concise information with creativity and flair.

Criteria for Assessment

  • A research project that can be satisfactorily explored.
  • Ability to plan a well-structured, independent academic project.
  • Quality and application of historical themes in fashion & textile research & creative practice.
  • Analytical & critical engagement with the subject in relation to both images and texts.
  • Appropriate use of referencing of images and texts, and the inclusion of a bibliography.

PROJECT WEIGHTING INFORMATION Within the module FQ1001, the presentation is worth 40% of the module mark, and the written element is worth 60%. This is referred to as the "Project Output" piece of assessment listed under Assessment Methods. Students must achieve a pass mark of 40% or more for this assignment.

Penalty for Late Submission

If you submit work late, but within 5 working days of the published deadline, you will obtain a maximum mark of 40%. Any work submitted LATER than 5 working days will be awarded a mark of 0%.
