Assessment Brief

Assessment Information
Assessment Title   Case-Studies in Food Poisoning
Things to include:
  • In your report you should consider the incubation period, what symptoms were reported, the foods involved and groups who may be particularly susceptible.
  • Each outbreak maybe caused by more than one pathogen (these pathogens will have been previously discussed in the module). Do not consider pathogens that have not been discussed in the lectures.
  •  It is not sufficient to simply state what pathogen you think was responsible for the outbreak; you must EXPLAIN why you have excluded other possible causes of the outbreak mentioned in the lectures. Failure to do this will result in lost marks.

Assessment Brief

Assessment Information
Assessment Task

This assessment is based upon food poisoning and epidemiology. It is supported by the lecture content provided in the first half of the module. Further support and information will be provided in the workshop and lab sessions.

This assessment is based around case studies into an outbreak of food poisoning. You must complete the case study you have been allocated. Any deviation from the correct case study will result in a non-submission.

CAREFULLY read the case-report and write your own report addressing the points provided.  You should write up to 1000 words +/- 10%. Assignments must be written using the Cadmus platform in Moodle.

You may include figures, tables and / or diagrams. When writing your assignment, do not include the information provided in the case scenario that you have been sent as you will use-up your word limit.

  • CAREFULLY read the case-report you are assigned and write your assignment addressing the points provided below.:
  •  Choose the case study that applies to the group you are in. Fill out the table; Using the data, fill in the missing information (Attack rate, Relative risk) and provide an example of your calculations) Copy or cut and paste it into Cadmus. Decide which values and type(s) of graph you would use to construct (2 maximum) graphs. For example, a forest plot  and make sure they are implemented / copied into Cadmus (you have been provided with lower and higher 95% confidence levels). Ensure all graph(s) are labelled correctly with figure legends.
  • Using the data from Table 2 produce an epidemic chart / curve. Label appropriately 25 marks
  •  Explain how Relative Risk table works and the differences between Relative Risk and Odds Ratio. Using this information, discuss which food(s) is / are likely to be the source of the contamination and why 15 marks
  • What organism(s) do you suspect has caused the outbreak and why?  (Is it infectious or intoxication) 15 marks
  •  What is the pathogenicity of the suspected pathogen you have deduced 15 marks
  •  Discuss in detail what laboratory tests and tools could be used to investigate the outbreak and identify the pathogen 20 marks
  • References, Grammer, Scientific language 10 marks

Completion of this assessment will address the following learning outcomes:
2  Correctly identify the causative agents in a range of food poisoning scenarios
3 Summarise the key clinical tests for identifying a range of microbes and the associated therapeutic strategies
4 Explain how epidemiology is used to monitor populations for changes in infectious disease trends and trace the source of outbreaks
