Welcome to your first modules of level 5, and the first modules that count towards your final degree classification! Semester 3 is made up of 2 modules (a 20-credit and a 40-credit) that will span the full 12 weeks, and are connected by one shared brief.
These modules are:
VIS5044 Collaborative Practice: Developing & Pitching:
The goal of this module is to work collaboratively with a team to unpack a creative brief and find the insights and instructions to help determine strategic and creative decision-making. You will learn about project management, sharing responsibilities and working to tight deadlines, as well as how your team can pitch your ideas persuasively, selling your recommendations in a narrative structure.
VIS5043 Collaborative Practice: Production:
In continuation from VIS5044, the goal of this module is to work collaboratively as a team to showcase a portfolio of branded media assets as part of a marketing communication campaign. Your workflow will follow the process of ‘preproduction’, ‘production’ and ‘postproduction’, and at each phase, you will use your creativity and project management skills to assign roles and responsibilities to your teammates. All roles will be explained, and you will be shown how to perform them professionally by both the teaching team and specialist technicians.
Throughout the duration of both modules, you will be working with a live client to pitch and deliver branded media assets for them to consider using on their socials.
Brummie duo DAMEDAME* (made up of Barbara and Shiloh) are stepping into the spotlight with a sound that defies boundaries. These multi-talented artists, known for their production and writing credits with stars like Jorja Smith, Tems and Wizkid, are now carving their own path. Their debut single, A STRANGER, is a powerful indie track featuring rumbling basslines and distorted riffs that earned a coveted spot on the official EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack.
Blending captivating vocals, intricate instrumentals and evocative storytelling, DAMEDAME* delivers a sonic experience like no other. With their innovative creativity and authentic passion for crafting distinctive music, they are quickly establishing themselves as some of the most exciting talents in the industry.
You will be tasked with creating relevant social content for the group DAMEDAME*.
You must understand their brand (what is considered on brand and to avoid what is off brand), their place in the wider music scene, how much Birmingham/West Midlands plays a role in the group and their sound, as well as understand who their target audience is and how your social content must be relevant to them.
This is a live brief, working with the group DAMEDAME*, who will introduce themselves to you at the start of the module, giving you their story and explaining their music.
They will also come back to help assess and critique your plans before you start making the work in the film and photography studios (and on location, if you see this as relevant). Finally, returning to help assess your final pitch presentations of your created work at the end of the semester.
Production Deliverables:
Your deliverables must consistently align with the client’s branding and include the band’s original music (this will be provided).
This asset creation will not include the group itself; it will be up to your imagination and creativity to consider how you will use the selected DAMEDAME* song within your social assets.
For example, your x6 10-15s videos for Instagram could be a short series that tells the story of a group of friends getting ready for a night out, with DAMEDAME*’s music playing in the background. Within this example, you must make sure the models, actors, scene, setting, location etc are all relevant to the DAMEDAME* brand and speak to their target audience.
These modules teach and assess your technical skills in planning and production, and how to understand a brand and make assets that are relevant to the target audience, whilst remaining consistent and on brand throughout. You will also learn about Driscoll’s ‘Model of Reflection’, and submit an individual reflective report alongside your group’s pitch, assessing and evaluating your contribution.
