A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills’

Guidelines: 

For the purpose of the Skills Demonstration (1) you are required to play the role of a supervisor in a fictional company (as per the case study given below) and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the following supervisory functions in the context of that company by completing the 6 requirements below. You may use fictional details where appropriate:

  • The assessment of risks for which insurance cover may be required for this company.
  • Draw up suitable policies and formats for establishing and maintaining lines of communication with clients, colleagues, and other relevant parties.
  • Draw up suitable policies and procedures for ensuring delivery of quality services to all clients.
  • Preparation of the policies, procedures, and criteria to be adopted for staff selection, planning and conduct of interviews for recruitment of new staff in the company, their training, and subsequent adoption of suitable supervisory procedures for performance management of the employees.

Please go through the Case Study given below in detail and formulate your responses, as indicated at the end of the Case Study along with the Marking Scheme:

You have recently been appointed as a supervisor in the Sales Department of Midland Groceries Ltd. You have nine workers in your team which is responsible for handling counter sales and maintaining good customer relations with the retail and wholesale clients.

With your expertise gained through good management training, you have been instrumental in helping the company in recruiting some members of your team in the Midlands. The company has now embarked on expanding its operations in the South and East of Ireland for which it is now embarking on to recruit more workers. The management wants you to produce the following documentation to assist the Company going forward:

Requirement 1

Identify what all insurance covers are essential for this company after a detailed analysis of the business risks which justify recommended insurance cover.

Requirement 2

What suitable policies and procedures would you consider necessary for establishing and maintaining effective lines of communication with clients, colleagues, higher management and other relevant third parties.

What suitable policies and procedures would you adopt for ensuring delivery of high-quality services to all clients including feedback systems and supervision.

As part of your preparation for the training session, you are required to develop a 3-day training plan in a standard tabulated format for new employees that is suitable and relevant for the company. You may use a standard tabulated format used by employers/training providers

Flowing from the above Training Plan, you are required to develop one Session plan for one Session of Training in a standard tabulated format.

Demonstrate how will you evaluate and assess the training delivered, when completed, in order to measure outcomes as below:

  1. understanding and achievement of the training objectives.
  2. An aide-memoire on lessons-learnt for yourself, as the training organiser, for the future.
  3. Perspective of the higher management on the return-on-investment of time and resources devoted to this training.

10 Marks (Approx. 1000 Words)

The layout of the Skills Demonstration should follow the sequence below: 

  • Introduction – to include how you have planned to compile your SD1 Assignment.
  • Separate detailed discussion on each of the 6 Requirements above, with appropriate headings/sub-headings.
  • Your Conclusion to indicate the process followed in compiling the SD1 Assignment and learning achieved.
  • Bibliography/Reference List.
  • Appendices if any.
