PLP24103 BSM Module Aims 

  • To integrate the emerging subject knowledge of each students with working methods from a range of disciplines to create a multidisciplinary synthesis of practice.
  • To encourage students to develop attributes such as resilience or self-efficacy via collaborative working practices.  
  • To enable students to learn new modes of creative thinking, practice, skills and application.  
  • To enable students to gain insight and empathy in applying their emerging creative practice to real-world challenges, for social impact, entrepreneurial activity and industry preparation.  
  • To enable students to benefit from cross-pollination with other disciplines and their various philosophical worldviews and practice traditions.

PLP24103 BSM Project Brief

Overview of Module Activities: 

This module is the first in a series of five that you will study on the Business Management course. It aims to prepare you for the world of work and will guide you through a range of personal and employ ability skill development activities including the following:

  • Various activities to find out more about yourself, your values, purpose, and motivations (LO1, LO2)
  • Skills audits to better understand the skills you have and the skills that you will need to develop through the module and the course (LO2, LO4)
  • Group activities for practising a range of employability skills including interpersonal, communication, team working, public speaking, and cultural awareness (LO2, LO3, LO4)
  • Research of industries, sectors, job roles, etc. to better understand the career and further study opportunities available to you as a business student (LO1, LO2)
  • An appropriate outing to further develop your understanding of work and employability
  • Study skills workshops to increase your understanding of how to present your work and ideas, how to organise your time, what academic integrity is, etc. (LO1, LO4)
  • Independent learning activities to further develop your study and employability skills and provide evidence of these in your portfolio (LO1, LO2)
  • Rave lates and other work-based, employability, or networking events and add the evidence for this in your portfolio (LO2, LO4)
  • Opportunities to demonstrate your ability to attend classes on time and to participate and contribute to class activities and discussions (LO2)

Project Brief/The Assessment: 

With reference to the above activities and the concepts and theories covered in class, produce a portfolio (2500 words) using Avery & Greenwald’s (2023) seven pillars of personal branding. Your portfolio should include the following:

  • Introduction (200-words)
  • What is the theme of your portfolio (i.e., personal branding), what does it include (i.e., elements of your personal brand) and what is its key aim?

1. Define Your Purpose (LO1, LO3): 300 words

  • Which industry would you like to work in and why? What is your ideal job role?
  • What attracts you to your chosen industry, what would motivate you to do well in your chosen job role, and what would success in this role mean to you? 
  • What is your personal value proposition?

2. Audit Your Personal Brand (LO1, LO2, LO4): 300 words

  • What skills and experiences do you currently have and how have you used them in this module? 
  • What skills and experiences would you need for your ideal job? 
  • What gaps are there in your skills and experiences (see 7 below)? 

3. Summarise Your Personal Narrative (LO3): 200 words

  • What is your USP and how will you communicate it?
  • Construct a one-minute (200 words) elevator pitch that highlights your skills, experiences, and key career goal.

4. Embody Your Brand (LO1, LO2): 400 words

  • How do you embody your brand? What social events, SU clubs etc. have you joined or take part in? 
  • What employability events (e.g., Rave lates, networking, etc.), activities or study skills workshops have you participated in, and how useful have they been for the development of your personal brand?
  • What are your personal or professional connections or achievements through this module, and how have they helped you to develop your personal brand?

5. Communicate Your Personal Brand (LO2, LO3, LO4): 300 words

  • List the social media channels you use and offer an analysis of their effectiveness in communicating your personal brand.
  • Create a LinkedIn profile (and provide the link for this). Comment on what it says about your personal brand. 

6. Socialise your Personal Brand (LO1, LO2, LO4): 300 words

  • What groups and networks would you like to join on LinkedIn or other social media channels? 
  • Why would they be useful for developing your brand?

7. Strengthen Your Personal Brand (LO4): 300 words

  • With reference to the gaps in your skills and experiences (see 2 above) produce a SMART skill development plan for how you will obtain the skills and experiences you will need for a personal brand your chosen job and industry. 
  • Conclusion: 200 words
  • Give an overall statement on all the above sections and on your personal brand – what is good and what can be improved.
  • List of References
  • Add a list of 8-15 references in the Harvard Referencing System. You should use the resources listed in your reference list to support the points and reflections you make in the above sections.
  • Appendices 
  • Add pictures, tickets, screenshots, certificates, test outcomes, emails of appointments etc. of the activities, study skills, and events that you participated in during the module and as part of your independent learning.

Students who miss the deadline or fail this project may be required to complete a retrieval project which demonstrates that the learning outcomes have been achieved. Students should be aware that retrieval submissions are capped at a bare pass grade, unless the extenuating circumstances panel uphold an evidenced application. The deadline for retrieval submissions will be determined at an Assessment Board.
