Talk to an Experta) Liquid crystal devices are increasingly used in a wide variety of non-display applications. Choose ONE example of a non-display application of liquid crystals and describe its operation, including the relevant physics. Discuss both the advantages and drawbacks associated with the use of liquid crystals in your chosen application.
b) A medical device company wants to develop a lightweight, electrically tuneable liquid crystal lens for a portable retinal imaging system. The lens must satisfy the following conditions: Aperture > 8 mm, Focal length tuneable between 20 and 100 mm, Power consumption < 100 mW, Response time < 200 ms and Operation at room temperature.
i. Evaluate the available liquid crystal device technologies and recommend the technology that you consider best suited to the application. Explain the electrooptic physics involved in your chosen lens technology. Include relevant labelled diagrams, such as director orientation and refractive index profiles. Explain at least three key limitations of this technology and propose improvements.
ii. Compare your chosen technology with one alternative technology and explain why the alternative was not selected.
iii. Liquid crystal lenses are often polarisation-dependent. Discuss the consequences of polarisation dependence for the medical device described above and explain two practical methods that could be used to mitigate these issues.
(a) Liquid crystals occur in abundance in nature. Prepare a scientific report on ONE of the following topics
i. The importance of liquid crystalline phases in cells; OR
ii. Liquid crystals and fibre formation in nature (eg. Spider silk).
Your answer should include a description of the relevant liquid crystal phase/s and a discussion of how the liquid crystal properties influence the biological system considered, illustrated by real examples. Your answer should include appropriate diagrams, quantitative discussion where relevant and a clear explanation of the underlying physics.
(b) A company wishes to develop an anti-counterfeiting security label for high-value products. The company has identified a biological inspiration from the cuticle of several beetle species that exhibit metallic colours generated by liquid crystalline structures.
i. Select a beetle species that exhibits structural colour arising from liquid crystal organisation and explain the LC phase responsible for the optical behaviour and the physical origin of the reflected colour. Explain why this LC phase forms within the biological cuticle and how the biological architecture could inspire an anticounterfeiting device.
ii. For a beetle cuticle exhibiting a cholesteric liquid crystal structure, for a peak reflected wavelength of 540 nm, a reflection bandwidth of 80 nm and refractive indices no=1.5 and ne=1.65, estimate the helical pitch of the LC structure. State all assumptions and explain your reasoning. Predict how the reflected wavelength and optical appearance would change if the helical pitch increased by 10-20%, birefringence decreased due to temperature and mechanical compression reduced the pitch.
iii. The company is considering two manufacturing approaches. Replicating the biological structure using a polymerised cholesteric LC and producing colour using conventional pigments and metallic inks. Recommend which approach should be adopted and justify your choice with reference to optical performance, manufacturability, durability, environmental stability, anti-counterfeiting effectiveness, and production costs.
