Module aims

The aims of this module are: 

1. Develop the student’s skills in designing qualitative research data-gathering instruments in Applied Linguistics and the two routes TESOL and Intercultural Communication and designing quantitative analysis instruments. 

2. Focus on ethical issues surrounding research including obtaining ethical approval. 

3. Develop the students’ oral and written academic presentation skills. 

4. Develop the student’s ability to focus on their specific research interests. 

5. Guide in writing a research proposal in a chosen field. 

6. Provide students with the skills and knowledge so that they can fulfil the demands of research and writing a Masters-level dissertation and/or carry out research in their professional domain including classroom-based action research. 

Module Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of this module, you will: 

a. Achieve a detailed understanding of the range and rationales of research methodologies and instruments used in research in Applied Linguistics. 

b. Achieve an in-depth understanding of research ethics, including gaining ethical approval for your project. c. able to effectively organise and present orally, academic research. 

d. Identify relevant written sources to support your proposal and dissertation. 

e. able to organise and write academic research in Applied Linguistics. 

Overview of learning and teaching activities in the module: 

In the initial part of the module, learning and teaching strategies will include lectures, class and group discussions of relevant issues and themes and tutorials on assignment preparation. There will also be group tasks involving, for example, analysis of different types of data. There will be some elements of a flipped classroom with pre-class work such as readings or listening to short presentations in preparation for classroom discussions. 

All materials will be made available on Blackboard and classes will be recorded and made available on ReCap. 

The latter part of the module will consist of a seminar and tutorials/reviews focussing on the development of the research proposal.
