Assessment Overview

After completing your OSCE, you will receive a written summary of the patient scenario  and feedback, you were assessed on. Using the scenario and feedback, you must produce a critical, evidence based analysis of your own clinical performance. Your discussion should focus on:

  • How you assessed the patient using the ABCDE framework
  • How you interpreted the patient’s physiological data
  • How you used NEWS2 to support decision making
  • How you escalated care, including communication strategies such as SBAR
  • How your professional behaviour, teamwork, and clinical judgement influenced patient safety
    Your analysis must be supported by current, evidence based literature, including clinical guidelines, research, and decision making frameworks.

  • Critically analyse and evaluate strategies used to assess and manage the acutely ill adult.
  • Systematically interpret physiological data and justify your clinical decisions using evidence.
  • Communicate clinical findings effectively to other healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate competence in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration.
    Assignment Structure and Guidance 
    Your report should follow the structure of the OSCE feedback sheet. Use the examiner’s comments to guide your analysis and identify areas for development. This is not a reflective essay, so do not use a reflective model.

1. Introduction (200–250 words)

Include:

  • A concise overview of the OSCE scenario.
  • The purpose of the report (critical analysis of your clinical performance).
  • The key areas you will examine ( For example: ABCDE, NEWS2, escalation, professional behaviour…..).

2. Critical Clinical Analysis (1,200–1,400 words)

This is the main body of your assignment. You should:

a. Identify the key clinical issues

  • What was happening with the patient?
  • What were the immediate priorities?

b. Analyse your ABCDE assessment

For each component:

  • Describe what you did.
  • Interpret the physiological findings.
  • Critically evaluate whether your actions were appropriate, timely, and evidence based.
  • Identify anything you missed or could have done differently, supported by guidelines (e.g., NICE, Resuscitation Council UK).

c. Use NEWS2 to support decision making

  • Explain how the NEWS2 score informed your clinical judgement.
  • Evaluate whether escalation was appropriate.

d. Evaluate your escalation of care

  • Discuss how you communicated using SBAR.
  • Analyse clarity, accuracy, and prioritisation.
  • Link to evidence on effective communication in acute care.

e. Professional behaviour, teamwork, leadership

  • Discuss how your behaviour supported patient safety.
  • Consider situational awareness, prioritisation, and clinical reasoning.

f. Missed areas and alternative approaches

  • Identify gaps in your performance.
  • Explain what you should have done, supported by theory and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and clinical insight.

3. Reflection on Practice (300–400 words)

This section provides a short, focused reflection on your performance during the OSCE. You are not required to use a reflective model. Instead, reflect analytically on your actions and decision making.

Your reflection should include:

  • Strengths demonstrated during the assessment
  • Areas for development, linked to clinical reasoning and performance
  • How the OSCE experience will influence your future practice, confidence, and leadership
  • How you plan to address the gaps identified, drawing on evidence based strategies or further learning

You may reflect on:

  • What went well
  • What did not go as planned
  • What you would do differently in future practice
  • How this learning will shape your development as a safe, effective practitioner
    Do not reflect on the OSCE format itself.

4. Conclusion (100–150 words)

Your conclusion should summarise:

  • The key insights gained from your critical analysis
  • The importance of evidence based assessment, clinical reasoning, and timely escalation
  • How the learning from this assignment will support your ongoing development as a competent, confident practitioner who can recognise and respond to patient deterioration
    This section should not introduce new information.

5. References

  • Use Harvard referencing throughout.
  • Include a minimum of 20 academic sources, such as peer reviewed journals, NICE guidelines, RCUK guidance, and relevant textbooks.
