Question 1

The leadership requirements of different fields may vary, but overall, leaders in all fields of activity share common tasks and responsibilities.

The responsibilities of a leader will depend very much on the leadership situation but will fall roughly into three areas: visionary, task and team leading responsibilities.

Describe each area (from the Introduction to Leadership course)in 50-100 words.

Visionary:

A visionary leader sets a clear direction for the future and inspires others to work toward it. They create a compelling vision that aligns with values and goals, communicate it effectively, and help the team understand the bigger picture. Visionary leaders motivate others by giving meaning to tasks and fostering innovation and long-term thinking.

Task-oriented:

Task-oriented leadership focuses on planning, organizing, and monitoring the work needed to achieve specific goals. These leaders delegate tasks, set deadlines, manage resources, and ensure efficiency and productivity. They are results-driven and prioritize completing tasks to a high standard while balancing time, cost, and quality.

Team-oriented:

Team-oriented leaders foster collaboration and build strong working relationships among team members. They support individual and group development, resolve conflicts, and promote a positive and inclusive culture. This type of leader values communication, mutual respect, and morale, encouraging team cohesion and shared responsibility.

Question 2

To be an effective leader, a person must have (and be seen to have) certain qualitiesthat will result in a willingness to follow the lead they give. List three qualities (from the Leadership Qualities course) that you want to gain or develop, and for each, state one way that you can gain or develop that quality. Write 50-100 words for each.

Three qualities:

  1. Confidence Confidence enables a leader to make decisions decisively and communicate with authority. To develop this quality, I can practice public speaking and take on small leadership roles in group settings. Gaining experience in making decisions and receiving feedback will gradually build self-assurance and help me become more comfortable taking the lead.
  2. Adaptability Adaptability allows leaders to respond effectively to change and uncertainty. To develop this, I can challenge myself with new experiences and environments, such as volunteering for cross-functional teams or working on unfamiliar projects. Reflecting on what I learn in each situation will help me become more flexible and open to change.
  3. Empathy Empathy helps leaders understand and respond to the emotions and perspectives of others. To build empathy, I can actively practice listening without judgment, ask open- ended questions, and observe non-verbal cues. Engaging in regular self-reflection and seeking feedback from others will also help me improve how I relate to team members.
