OUMH1303 ENGLISH FOR ORAL COMMUNICATION  ASSIGNMENT BRIEF JANUARY 2026 SEMESTER

INSTRUCTION

• All tasks must be delivered in English.
• The cover sheet of your assignment must contain the following information: Course code and name / Semester / Your full name and student number / Your email address and mobile number.
• For the written assignment, use Times New Roman or Arial, 12-point font, with 1.5-line spacing in A4 format. Ensure that the assignment you submit is paginated.
• Present your responses to the tasks in MULTIPLE files. Adhere to the following structure:

Part I Task 1 – A recorded speech presentation file (max 400MB)
Part I Task 2 – Reflective Report
Part II – Proof of Online Class Participation

• Submit your files ONLINE by: 5 APRIL 2026.

Late submission without prior permission will be penalised with a mark deduction.
Assignments that show heavy reliance on or substantial use of AI-generated content, without appropriate critical engagement, verification, or proper attribution, will be penalised accordingly.

This assignment accounts for 70% of the total marks for the course:

PART I

TASK 1: INDIVIDUAL SPEECH PRESENTATION (40%)

PURPOSE

This assignment is designed to engage students in the complete process of delivering an effective speech; from planning the speech, to producing a recorded speech that showcases creativity in delivery, to writing a reflective report in the wrap-up phase. Through these tasks, students will demonstrate confidence in preparing and practising practical communication skills in both formal and informal contexts while applying fundamental values essential to effective oral communication across diverse situations.

TASK REQUIREMENTS

Delivering an effective speech involves several key steps. One of the initial steps is to determine the purpose of the speech and to identify an engaging title that will attract your target audience.

With reference to the OUMH1303 Module (pp 177-182), choose ONE (1) speech purpose from the following:

• To instruct
• To report

and present a recorded informative speech on the topic:

• ANIMAL

You have to prepare and record a speech presentation for submission. Adhere to the following task specifications:

1. Begin by brainstorming the topic: ANIMAL and find a smaller or more focused aspect/subtopic to begin planning your speech text. The topic can be seen as a singular or plural noun. You MUST discuss your speech title and speech plan with your e-tutor either in the e-forum or during the e-tutorial sessions. Choose a title you feel comfortable presenting. For example, an instructional speech: ‘How to Identify Common Malaysian Wildlife Tracks’ or a reporting speech: ‘A Report on Pet Abandonment Cases in Urban Areas’.
2. Plan and write your speech text in short notes or the complete text. Your introduction should state your name, ID, Course, and the purpose of the speech with the title.
3. You can refer to various resources or use your personal observations, experience, and knowledge when writing the content, but make sure that the content of the speech is appropriate for your targeted audience.
4. You will need to determine your role as the producer, speaker etc, and the surroundings (background, lighting, soundproof area), and other elements to consider, even though these will not be mentioned explicitly during the presentation.
5. Plan visual aids carefully. You are encouraged to use creativity and innovation in producing the video by catering to both the brain’s visual and auditory systems, body language, facial expressions, imagery and music, etc. You may also use applications to further exemplify the speech text, like PowerPoint Presentation, Canva, iMovie, Kinemaster, Google Slides and many others. However, remember to record a speech presentation, NOT a video presentation.
6. Record your speech between 7 and 10 minutes. Marks will be deducted either for a duration of less than 7 minutes or more than 10 minutes. Adhere to the following:
   Look professional and deliver confidently
7. Ensure that your speech has an introduction
   The purpose of the speech must either be to INSTRUCT or to REPORT.
   The video screen must capture the top half of your body so that your hand gestures and facial expressions are visible at all times OR at least 80% of the recording duration.
   Your speech must be engaging and interesting.
   You must offer an ending (conclusion) in the video.
8. Ensure the recording of your speech is authentic, clear and organised. Remember, “you are the scriptwriter, the speaker and maybe even, the producer!”. Your aim is to deliver a speech that is engaging and interesting to your audience.
9. Submit your video online according to the instructions. If your video is larger than 400MB, please refer to the guidelines on how to compress your video for submission. You may also include a link to your video as a backup in 

Task 2. To get this link, upload your video to YouTube or an online storage service such as GDrive or OneDrive. Make sure that your link is NOT set to private access only and that the link is accessible before you submit your assignment.

Your speech will be assessed through 6 criteria:

1. Speech content
2. Presentation of the speaker
3. Originality and creativity of ideas,
4. Video recording organisation,
5. Overall and clarity of the video; and
6. Use of language

NOTE:

This is an individual task. The aim is to deliver a speech confidently and naturally, and NOT to make a creative video for social media platforms.

ASSIGNMENT RUBRICS PART I TASK 1: INDIVIDUAL SPEECH PRESENTATION (40%)

TASK 2: REFLECTIVE REPORT (20%)

PURPOSE

The purpose of Task 2 is for students to demonstrate their effective verbal and non-verbal language in expressing formal and informal communication through a reflective report.

TASK REQUIREMENTS

IMPORTANT: This task is a continuation of your recorded presentation of Task 1: Instructional or a reporting speech on the topic: ANIMAL

Write a critical reflection report on the process of carrying out the speech presentation. The structure of this report follows the basic essay structure of introduction, body and concluding paragraphs.

Your reflective report MUST include the following FIVE criteria and each criterion should be written in paragraphs between 300 and 350 words:

1. Reflection on the PROCESS; the planning stage of the video, during the recording of the video and after the video has been recorded. Describe the timeline for completing the task and the preparation of visual aids. How long did you plan and record etc? How important are creativity and innovation in this task? Why do you say so?
2. Reflection on the CONTENT (the topic/ issue) and rationalise how things could have been done in a better way. Is this topic/ issue familiar to you or vice versa? Why did you choose this topic? any significance to you? During the process of the video, there might be some instances where you realise your idea could have been improved in another way. Describe this situation too.
3. Reflection on the CHALLENGES that you faced in this assignment. How did you overcome your shyness/ lack of confidence in delivering the speech? Did you face any issues with the recording and editing? Share your challenges on the language process too – vocabulary and grammar in writing and delivering the speech. Describe well.
4. Show the video to ONE PERSON and inquire if the speech supports its purpose. If he/she believes the video is neither, ask for other suggestions that might help improve the speech or the speaker. Share this person’s thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of your video and compare them with your own beliefs.
5. Your PERSONAL THOUGHTS about completing this assignment (the video presentation and Reflective Report). How do you feel about it? Describe too, what are the advantages/disadvantages of this assignment? If you feel the video recording and or Reflective Report is/are not advisable, what would be a better alternative? Explain your rationale.

REMINDERS:

• A Reflective Report is written to evaluate, summarise, analyse, and reflect on an individual’s journey of a/some particular actions. It is almost similar to journal writing.
• Plagiarism is a serious offence. Do not use or claim the work of others as your own, and the use of AI generative tools (e.g., ChatGPT) to generate answers is not permitted. Marks will be penalised if an assignment is found to be heavily influenced by or predominantly written using AI tools rather than the student’s own understanding and expression. Please refer to Registrar’s Circular 5/2024: Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Learning, Assessment, and Project/Dissertation/Thesis Work.
