Assignment Description

You are required to produce a literature review that critically evaluates cross-cultural approaches and strategies in project management leadership, with a particular focus on methodologies that are suitable for specific stages of the project management cycle.

You are empowered to conduct independent research, providing industry-specific and international case studies, to convey established knowledge and contemporary concepts within your review.

You will be able to critically analyse and appraise unbiased and valid literature about Cultural Leadership within the context of International Project Management. You will need to identify areas of controversy in literature and answer any questions that need further research.

Consider topics covered throughout this module, for example:

• Leadership competencies and their place in Project Management
• Cross-cultural ethics and practices in Project Management
• Establishing vision and purpose
• Communication and stakeholder management at different stages of the Project Management cycle
• Organisational culture and the impact on project success
• Building high-performing teams across geographical borders
• Decision-making and critical thinking as a leader of a project
• Leadership project management standards to be upheld
• International HRM and adherence to standards and governance

Workshops providing further guidance on how to structure a literature review and select appropriate case studies will be provided.

The content must be underpinned with the inclusion of relevant academic theory, concepts, and models where appropriate, as well as contemporary industrial insights. These should be accurately cited and referenced according to York St John Harvard Referencing throughout.

Additional Information

The literature review can be created using Microsoft or other free software available to YSJ students; however, the submission format should be either Word or PDF. You have access to Microsoft software for free through your university account.

Your literature review should include the following structure:

• Student ID number, title of the assessment
• Introduction – an overview, to include the scope and aim
• Research methods – What method of research was reviewed, including limitations
• Findings – What did the reviewed research tell you
• Discussion – critical evaluation of findings
• Suggestions for future research – identification of gaps in published literature and case studies
• Conclusion – bringing all the information together
• Harvard reference list

Consider how you will organise your literature:

• Chronologically – Organising your sources by the date of publication can show how scholarly perspective on a topic has changed over time.

Or

• Methodologically – Organising by method or theme puts all of the sources with a similar focus together, making it very easy to see where differences in perspective emerge and illustrating what effect each method has on results and output.

The written work should contain all the relevant information but also be visually appealing, including the use of graphs, tables, and figures as appropriate. The writing style should be clear, concise and professional.

You will be assessed on:

• Your critical understanding of complex methodologies and practice relevant to leadership and international project management, aligned with the module learning outcomes
• Consistent organisation of literature
• Synthesis and critical appraisal of literature leading to a logical conclusion
• Use of valid research and appropriate referencing standards were used throughout.
