Unit 5 Assignment Guide

Example of a Good Research Topic

Assessment of Knowledge of Breast Cancer Among Women in the Ojodu Area of Lagos State. The topic has the components of a good research topic, which are: Variable to be examined (knowledge of breast cancer), study population (women), study location (Ojodu Area of Lagos State)

Sample Aims

Aims or objectives are what you hope to find answers to at the end of your research. It is expected that goals should be simple, straightforward, and not controversial.

For the study above, a good example of the aim will be:

To assess the level of knowledge that women in Ojodu have regarding breast cancer

1.2 Importance of Aims and Objectives

You are to explain the importance of the aims and objectives of the research (i.e. you are to first outline the aims and objectives, then explain their importance. Using the example above, I could explain that the results generated from this study will reveal the level of knowledge women in Ojodu have regarding breast cancer, if study findings show that there are low levels of knowledge, then the research finding can be presented to health and social workers via the ministry of health, thereby resulting in the planning and implementation of breast cancer awareness programs. This program can help women be equipped with the right knowledge regarding cancer, correct the misconceptions they may have regarding the disease, and increase their willingness to go for cancer screening programs.

1.3 Ethical Considerations

You are to explain the ethical considerations that apply to your current research, e.g confidentiality, informed consent, voluntary participation etc. Note that you are not to just define ethical considerations.

1.4 Research and Evidence-Based Practice

You are to explain the links between the research and evidence-based practice (i.e you are to explain how research and evidence-based practice are similar, if they are)

1.5 Contribution to Decision Making

You are to analyse the contribution of research and evidence-based practice (i.e. the general impacts of research and evidence-based practice, show in detail how research and evidence-based practice guide the decisions, or form the basis for decision-making among health and social care workers) on decision making

1.6 Contribution to Health and Social Care

You are to explain the contribution of research to health and social care provision (i.e. the impact of research to health and social care provision)

Task 2: (Literature Review)

A literature review is not a presentation of definitions or statistics. It is logically reviewing what previous researchers have done on the topic of interest.

The first step in a literature review is to search for scholarly articles/journals/studies/publications that address your topic of interest, (Using the example above, go on google and type; “scholarly/academic articles on knowledge of breast cancer among women). Several papers will come up, you are then to read through and review the papers and present the findings in those papers logically. In reviewing literature, you are not expected to copy and paste the research of others. (Note that you are to review a minimum of 10 papers and report the research findings logically in a narrative form).

Literature Review Structure

Your literature review can have sub-topics:

Introduction: Here, you can briefly present the standard definition of breast cancer, presentations (signs and symptoms) of breast cancer, the age group mostly affected etc.

Prevalence of breast cancer: You are to review the study findings of previous researchers. i.e. present what previous researchers found out regarding the prevalence of breast cancer in Africa, Nigeria, and maybe Lagos State as our example state.

Knowledge of breast cancer: Here, you are to report what other reports have said regarding the knowledge of breast cancer. E.g., several studies have been conducted to have an insight into the level of knowledge women have regarding breast cancer. According to a study conducted in United Arab Emirates (UAE), study findings show that a majority of the study participants (89%), were correctly informed that breast cancer is a common illness and that it affects majorly women aged forty and above. However, knowledge scores were low with regard to knowledge of signs and symptoms. The same study concluded that levels of knowledge regarding breast cancer were lower than expected. (Younis, M., Al-Rubaye, D., Haddad, H., Hammad, A. and Hijazi, M, 2016).

In reviewing the literature, you are not expected to copy and paste the research of others. (Note that you are to review a minimum of 10 papers and report the research findings logically in a narrative form)

TASK 3: (THE RESEARCH)

Please note that you are expected to do actual research using any study design of your choice. Review is not allowed as it requires expertise that you may not be equipped with at this level.

If you choose a quantitative research design, you are to develop a questionnaire with which you will collect data from study participants, after which you are expected to analyze your study findings and present them using simple percentages or charts.

You could also choose a qualitative research design where you interview study participants and record their responses with the aid of an audio recorder, after which you are to report these findings logically.

Task 3 can follow this outline: study location (a brief overview of where the study was conducted), target population (a brief description of study participants), research methodology (how you carried out data collection, the data collection instrument used; questionnaire or interview guide), and detailed results showing tables, pie charts or bar charts.

TASK 4: (IN POWERPOINT SLIDES)

You are to produce a set of slides and notes for a presentation on the findings of your literature review and research, draw conclusions based on your result (make inferences from your results) and make recommendations from your research (i.e. from your conclusions, make a suggestion on the subject matter).

Task 4 can follow this outline: title page containing (the title of the research), summary of literature review, research methodology, presentation of data/results, and finally, conclusion and recommendations.
