In this group project, you will form a group of 4 and collectively explore the concept of "modernity" by examining a European city of your choice, selecting a period between the late 18th century to the early 20th century (cut-off is 1914) to focus on. You may also choose a city under European colonial rule and administration. However, please do not select London or Paris (which will be covered in detail in lecture).
You will research key aspects of the city's transformation during this period and consider how the city embodied ‘modernity’. You may consider elements such as: its institutions, buildings and architecture, urban planning, technology and infrastructure, cultural life and forms of entertainment and leisure, social changes, and economic and political contexts.
Each group will produce:

2. A guidebook aimed at a contemporary audience of the period, explaining why the city was considered modern and a must-visit destination.
1. Please use at least 5 academic publications (books/journal articles) for your research. You may reference but do not rely solely on websites such as History.com or Wikipedia.
2. The guidebook should be no longer than 3000 words (750 words per student).
3.The fully laid out/designed softcopy (the dimensions will be determined by you) of the guidebook should be submitted by Tuesday 1 April 23:59pm on Canvas.
4. Groups presentations will take place during the Week 11 tutorial sessions.
5. The powerpoint presentation should be submitted via Canvas before your respective class begins in Week 11.
Note that there will be a late penalty of half a grade per day.
