Overall Task

This assessment requires you to identify a relevant nursing or healthcare issue that relates to nursing practice and develop a clear, focused research question and proposed research methodology.

You will justify the importance of this question and proposed design by critically engaging with the existing evidence base and supporting scholarly literature.

The aim is to develop your research literacy skills, including research question formulation, literature exploration, argument development, research design knowledge, and professional communication – which are foundational to evidence-based nursing practice.

Task Instructions :

Create a single PowerPoint slide ‘poster’, separate presentation notes with reference page, and video recording of you presenting the slide that:

1: Identifies a nursing or healthcare issue that relates to nursing practice

Provide a working title for the poster (include your name and student ID)

Introduce and provide topic overview – (approx. 3-4 sentences)

Briefly describe the practice issue and its context (e.g., population, setting) – (approx. 2-3 sentences)

Explain why this issue is important in nursing practice – (approx. 2-3 sentences)

2: Develops a clear research question

Present your practice-related research question, in words.

For example: present as a clear and focused research question using a recognized framework like PEO =

Population, Exposure, Outcome, or variants like PICO, PECO, PIO, PICo, SPIDER… Clearly identify the components of the framework.

Ensure your question is: specific, researchable, and relevant to nursing practice.

3: Demonstrates engagement with relevant literature

Conduct a structured search of scholarly literature (5-7 peer-reviewed sources, published within the last 5 years where possible and dependant on the scope of the topic).

Briefly summarise and reference key findings from the literature related to your topic.

Identify: What is currently known, gaps, tensions, or limitations within the literature.

4: Builds a justified argument for the significance of your question

Explain why your research question matters e.g. your rationale for this research and its relationship with nursing practice (approx. 2-3 sentences).

Consider: Impact on patient outcomes, implications for nursing knowledge and practice, relevance to Aotearoa New Zealand context (e.g., nursing standards, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori health and social justice, social determinants of health…).

5: Presents argument for proposed research design

Identify your chosen research design (e.g., qualitative, mixed-methods, single interview case study, integrative review or scoping review).

Provide a rationale for its selection.

Draw on relevant research design theories and frameworks to reference your proposed philosophical stance, methodological approach, and specific research methods.
