Background of assessment: At this level of academic studies, advanced scientific writing and professional critique is a requisite skill. This assessment requires cooperative work in the laboratory environment and submission of a professional report in the style of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology.
Outline of assessment: Your report will be based on laboratory work performed during Term 1. While your work was performed in a group setting, the report should reflect your own interpretation of the results, or a specific aspect of the analysis executed. Your electronic notes and professional report will be submitted as part of this assessment Lab notebook of assessment: An record must be established for the work performed.
These can be handwritten notes, digital images, OneNote, or other similar notebook software. At minimum, the notebook should have the following items:
− Student number
− Date of event (calculation, image captured, data analysed, etc.)
− Time of event
− Other persons involved in event (calculation, data analysis, lab partner, etc.)
− Presented in chronological order (from preparation to final analysis)
Technical Note Report: The report will be in the form of a Technical Note as described by the Journal of Analytical Toxicology (see here for Format of report). A minimum of 8 references are expected for your report. The Supplementary Data will refer to your lab notebook – please list the file name of the laboratory notebook in this section.
See below for examples of Technical Notes which are also provided on the module page
Example report 1
Example report 2
Example report 3
Include the following sections in your paper (You may add additional sections but should have these at a minimum)
− Abstract (150-200 words)
− Background and case history
− Methodology
− Results
− Discussion and Conclusion
− Supplementary Data (Lab Notebook)
− References
As a reminder, the use of AI software or external writers to prepare this assessment goes against the university Code of Conduct. If a report is found to be prepared from fraudulent sources, academic penalties may be applied to your degree. Please see the Library Bookings for support with this technical report.
Report word count:
1500-2000 words, including abstract, excluding graphs/tables/figures and references. Supplementary Data (Lab notebook) is not considered towards word count
