The following assessment tasks have been designed to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of this unit. 

All tasks must be completed.  

It is an important aspect of the assessment that you are able to demonstrate the application of acquired knowledge to appropriate examples of facilities management.  You should therefore read the individual tasks carefully in conjunction with the relevant assessment criteria in the unit specification.  You should also pay careful attention to the additional guidance (shown in red italics) in the unit specification as this indicates the appropriate level of knowledge required to successfully demonstrate the assessment criteria.

Each task shows the Learning Outcomes(s) and Assessment Criteria in the unit specification that the task has been designed to assess.  You should answer each task as it has been set.  Compare your answer for each task against the assessment criteria shown to ensure that they have been fully addressed by your answer(s).

Individual tasks must be completed within the word count shown.

Task 1 – Planning and allocating workload

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcomes 1, 3 and 4.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:

Task 1 comprises four questions:  You may address questions separately or combine them into a single answer for this task.  Your answer in either case must fully address the assessment criteria in the table shown above. 

Word count limit:  3,200

a.Using examples from your own experience, demonstrate how the workload of the facilities management function can be planned, organised and allocated.  Demonstrate and explain the planning issues involved in developing and maintaining the human resources that are necessary to deliver the workload efficiently and effectively.  

b.Using the same examples as Task 1a, describe how performance objectives were (or could have been) set for facilities staff.  

c.Describe how effective objective setting and performance measurement contribute to staff appraisal, distinguishing between formal and informal staff appraisal procedures.

d.Using examples from your own experience, describe appropriate and inappropriate use of different methods of communication in planning and allocating work.  Explain how, and to what extent, these methods met the principles of effective communication when dealing with people.

Task 2 – Recruitment and retention

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcome 2.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:

Task 2 comprises two questions:  You may address questions separately or combine them into a single answer for this task.  Your answer in either case must fully address the assessment criteria in the table shown above.

a.Describe the stages of a formal recruiting process.  Explain the factors that are (or should be) considered to ensure the effective recruitment of facilities staff to your present organisation (or one you are familiar with).   

b.Using the same organisation identified in Task 2a, identify policies and practices that are intended to encourage staff retention.  Explain the implications for the organisation when staff leave. 

Task 3 – Managing stress

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcome 5.  Your answer must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:

Task 3 comprises one question:  A single answer is required for this task.  It must fully address the assessment criteria in the table shown above.

a.Identify causes (or potential causes) of stress in a facilities management environment.  Describe how stress in the workplace can be managed.

Task 4 – Employment legislation

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcome 6.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:

a.Describe current legislation for the employment, health and welfare of people, showing how it protects both employees and employers.  Explain the issues that can arise from non-compliance and the implications for an organisation.

b.Explain discrimination legislation, showing how this impacts on the provision of facilities services in your present organisation (or one you are familiar with). 

c.Describe the stages of (1) grievance and (2) disciplinary procedures and explain the factors to be taken into account at each stage.
