FM4.01 OVERVIEW OF FACILITIES MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT

The following assessment tasks have been designed to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of this unit.  

All tasks must be completed.  

It is an important aspect of the assessment that you are able to demonstrate the application of acquired knowledge to appropriate examples of facilities management.  You should therefore read the individual tasks carefully in conjunction with the relevant assessment criteria in the unit specification.  You should also pay careful attention to the additional guidance (shown in red italics) in the unit specification as this indicates the appropriate level of knowledge required to successfully demonstrate the assessment criteria.

Each task shows the Learning Outcomes(s) and Assessment Criteria in the unit specification that the task has been designed to assess.  You should answer each task as it has been set.  Compare your answer for each task against the assessment criteria shown to ensure that they have been fully addressed by your answer(s).

Individual tasks must be completed within the word count shown.

(NB. The word count limits shown for individual tasks are provided to ensure that they receive appropriate weighting in your assessment.  Please note however that word counts are a limit and not a target).

Task 1 – Scope of facilities management function

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcome 01.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:

Task 2 – Facilities management services

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcome 02.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:   

Task 2 comprises five questions:

You may address questions separately or combine them into a single answer for this task.  Your answer in either case must fully address the assessment criteria in the table shown above.

Task 3 – FM roles and responsibilities

This task addresses the whole of  Learning Outcome 03.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:   

Task 3 comprises two questions:  

You may address questions separately or combine them into a single answer for this task.  Your answer in either case must fully address the assessment criteria in the table shown above. 
Word count limit:  1,000

a.    Explain a range of management functions that are key to a facilities manager’s role in your present organisation (or one you are familiar with).

b. Identify three facilities services that are provided by (or to) the organisation identified in Task 3a. Consider the functional analysis for facilities management shown in Figure 1.  Describe the different activities comprising the services you have identified according to whether they are strategic, tactical or operational areas of FM responsibility.  Explain how/why the classification you have given might vary between different organisations (eg size and sector).

Task 4 – Corporate social responsibility and sustainability

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcome 04.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:   

Environmental Social Governance (ESG) is now widely adopted as the overarching term to measure an organisation against frameworks and standards relating to environment and social governance, including leadership, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability. For the purpose of this task-based paper ESG/CSR can be used in relation to ‘Social Governance.’ 

Task 4 comprises two questions:

Word count limit:  1,000   

a.  Provide examples to explain the principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR) (or Environmental Social Governance (ESG) where this has been adopted), and sustainability and how they are demonstrated by your present organisation (or one you are familiar with).

b.   Describe tools and techniques that are (or could be) used to measure how effectively these principles have been applied to the facilities management function in the organisation you identified in Task 4a.

Task 5 – Communication methods

This task addresses the whole of Learning Outcome 05.  Your answers must address the Assessment Criteria shown in the following table:  

Task 5 comprises one question:  

A single answer is required for this task.  It must fully address the assessment criteria in the table shown above.
Word count limit:  500

a.    Use examples of FM service delivery to describe appropriate and inappropriate use of different communication methods.  Your descriptions should demonstrate how their appropriate use satisfies the principles of effective communication and enhances internal and external customers’ understanding of facilities management.
