The assignment consists of following two parts:
Part 1 - Database Specification and Design
Part 2 - Database System Development
Your specification and design is required to cover all phases of the requirements, analysis and design of the database and in particular the three phases of the database design process, Conceptual, Logical and Physical. It should include UML diagrams (as necessary), E-R diagrams, a description of the normalisation process undertaken, transaction analysis and a data dictionary, this needs to be accompanied by a detailed
description of the process that you undertook and any major decisions that you made with justifications for these (it may include more than this).

| Specification (20%) | This component of the assignment will be assessed on how accurately it translates the proposed database into a full complete database specification. The specification should include a clear description of the system and its purposes. This is likely to require you to specify the following: Mission statement and objectives, system definition, user views, standards and any other requirements. UML (use case diagrams along with accompanying use cases) may be included to outline and clarify the user views of the system. |
| Design (20%) | The design you create must be comprehensive and clearly based on the associated specification from the section above. It must cover all three parts of the design process – Conceptual, Logical and Physical. The E-R diagrams must define the entire proposed system. Any normalisation carried out must be to at least 3NF and clearly documented. A data dictionary should be provided, and key transactions must be analysed and documented. |
| Completeness of System (5%) |
It is not expected that you will be able to specify the entire system, but it is expected that the majority of the system will be specified and defined. You should show the full range of the system functionality and sufficient detail for what has been attempted. The system should be at a fully functional prototype stage and could have been developed by an independent developer or team of developers. |

Documentation Standard (5%) |
Documentation must be presented to a professional standard. It must be clearly laid out, sections clearly marked, and include a cover sheet and index. Language, grammar, and spelling should be of professional standard. A high level of attention to detail is expected. |
| Implementation | 20% | The system must be implemented on the server using web/PHP and must contain all required tables, relationships, indexes, queries, views, and reports to meet system requirements. It should support full CRUD operations with multiple tables. Advanced techniques such as stored procedures and complex reports will earn extra credit. The system should showcase proper database implementation, including SQL queries, and be functional and scalable while addressing specified needs. |
| System Performance and Completeness of System | 10% | The system must work reliably, provide good response time, and be easy to use. Usability of forms and reports will be assessed. While it is not expected to develop the entire system, the majority of the functionality must be implemented, showing the full range of system functionality as a fully functional prototype. |

Your work will be marked according to the assessment instructions provided within this document and the selected Learning Outcomes (LOS) (see above).
Furthermore, this assessment is marked using the assessment marking criteria or a similar rubric that aligns with the University's Generic Assessment Descriptors (see below). This is to ensure all assessment decisions are comparable regardless of the discipline or mode of assessment.
Please note, that you must meet the required baseline standards (40 - 499%) which will include the LOs and minimum expectations of the assessment. Further still, you must ensure you meet the requirements of each grade boundary to progress to the next i.e. you should demonstrate your learning through the standards of a 3rd, 2:2, and 2:1 to achieve a 2:1 (60-69%). These standards are designed to scaffold and build your learning to achieve your fullest potential in each criterion being assessed.
