Unit 726 Delivering Client Requirements through Professional Consulting Assessment Brief

Delivering consulting which has a tangible, positive impact on the client, requires a plethora of knowledge and skills. Consultants must be great communicators, agile, creative, able to problem-solve and develop solutions. They must be able to respond to client needs and build relationships which are trusted and sustainable.

Assessment brief CMI 726 has been designed to enable professional consultants to evidence their ability to deliver client-centric consulting. They will construct a consulting proposal and report on how the consulting engagement was delivered. Finally, professional consultants will have the opportunity to evaluate outcomes and formulate recommendations to improve the delivery and impact of their professional consulting.

Assessment Tasks And Word Count

Assessment brief CMI 726 features the following assessment tasks. Further detail is provided against each assessment task within the brief.

Guideline word count

The written word, however generated and recorded, is expected to form the majority of assessable work produced by Learners at Level 7. The amount and volume of work for this unit should be broadly comparable to a word count of 4000-4500 words within a margin of +/-10%.  The excessive use of word count is not grounds for referral, however the CMI reserves the right to return work to the Centre for editing and resubmission by the Learner.

The following are excluded from inclusion in word count, if used and not required by the assessment brief: an introduction to a job role, organisation or department, index or contents pages, headings and subheadings, diagrams, charts and graphs, reference list or bibliography, reflective statement drawn from undertaking the assignment and how this has impacted on the learner’s work. Delivering Client Requirements Through Professional Consulting

Professional consultants must feel confident and be adept to meet their clients’ needs through professional consulting.

The aim of Task 1a and Task 1b is for the professional consultant to evidence their ability to construct a formal proposal to consult with a client and secondly to report on how a professional consulting engagement was delivered.

Task 1a

You are required to construct a proposal with a specified client entitled:

‘Professional consulting proposal’

To meet the requirements of Task 1a, you must:

• Construct a formal proposal to consult with a client (AC1.1)

The context of the engagement with the client used as a basis for the proposal must be sufficient in size, complexity, scope and impact to reflect consulting activities outlined in the chartered professional consultant framework (e.g. leadership, change, strategic impact). Proposal is focussed on one client requirement.

Guidance for completion of Task 1A

• The proposal must be developed for a specified client such as an organisation in the public sector (local and national government). Private. Third sector. Local, international, global, cross-border organisations. Internal. Project and programme-based organisations. SMEs. Partnerships. Sole Traders. Limited liabilities Companies (LLPs).
• The proposal must be formal in nature in line with industry norms. Please see indicative content for guidance.
• The proposal must include subheadings.

Task 1b

You are required to write a structured report entitled:

‘The delivery of professional consulting to meet the client requirements’ To meet the requirements of Task 1b, you must:

• Report on the delivery of professional consulting to meet the client requirements (AC1.2)

Guidance for completion of Task 1B

• • The structured report must be developed for a specified client. This may be based on the delivery of consulting for the specified client in Task 1a or it may be based on the delivery of consulting to another client for whom you have consulted with.
  • The report must include well-chosen examples which illustrate the influence of organisational context on leadership practice.
  • The structured report should be completed using a formal reporting framework (i.e. ISO 20700. Organisational requirements/style for reporting (e.g. Abstract/executive summary, introduction, background, aims and objectives, research and methodology (use of data/tools and techniques),
  • The content of the structured report should consolidate the whole process of the delivery of consulting (beginning with the commencement of the consulting engagement, delivery strategies and methodologies applied through to the conclusion of the engagement and the agreement of next steps).

Task 2

You are required to write a report entitled:

‘The delivery and impact of professional consulting to the client’ The report must be presented in TWO (2) sections.

2a. The delivery of professional consulting to the client

You are required to critically reflect on the delivery of professional consulting to the client (AC2.1) Your reflection must include reference to:

• Relationship between initial proposal and delivery of professional consulting
• Delivery of client benefits and quality assurance
• The effectiveness of strategies/theories/advice used and/or provided during the consulting engagement
• Ability to balance client need with own organisation’s values Ability to remain a trusted advisor

2b. Recommendations to improve the delivery and strategic impact of professional consulting

You are required to formulate recommendations to improve the delivery and strategic impact of professional consulting (AC2.2)

The recommendations should be based on the outcomes of the critical reflection of how the professional consulting was delivered to the client.

Guidance for completion of Task 2

• The critical reflection must include well-chosen examples and be underpinned with relevant theoretical concepts.
• In preparation to develop recommendations to improve the delivery and strategic impact of professional consulting, you should take time to reflect on not only your personal ability to deliver the consulting, but also how the consulting was managed and led (e.g. terms of contract, resources, use of technology, data and information).
• The report should include subheadings.
