You are required to submit a 3000-word individual report demonstrating your comprehension of key leadership issues. Your report should articulate what defines effective leadership, showcase your ability to apply leadership and management theories in practical scenarios and reflect on your personal leadership experiences and development.

Individual Written Report on Leadership

You are required to submit a 3000-word individual report addressing the following four specific questions:

• What is involved in being a successful leader?
  
  
• Can good leadership be developed, and if so, how?
  
  
• What distinguishes leadership from management?
  
  
• What have you learnt about leadership from your own experiences in this module and/or elsewhere?
• Your report should demonstrate your understanding of key leadership issues, explain what constitutes effective leadership, and show
  
  
• your ability to apply leadership and management theories in a practical context. Additionally, your report must reflect critically on your personal leadership experiences and development, as well as the leadership of others, using relevant theories.

Your assignment will be evaluated based on the assessment criteria (detailed provided in the page below). Pay particular attention to the “REFLECTION” criterion. When providing personal reflections, go beyond merely describing experiences. Using reflective theory models such as Gibbs’, Kolb’s, Schon’s and Dewey’s to critically analyse your interpretation of events and discuss what you have learned about leadership. This includes reflecting on both your own leadership experiences and the leadership of others.

Word Count: 3,000 words (+/- 10%)   

Inclusions:  The word count includes all content except the title page, contents page, and reference list. Tables written by you within the report are included in the word count.

You may include charts, diagrams, pictures, or figures as needed to support your analysis and reflection.

File Format: Submission on Moodle MUST be in .doc, .docx, .odt, or .pdf.

Assessment Criteria

Your assignment will be evaluated based on the following seven criteria:

• KNOWLEDGE: Ability to explain key leadership and management concepts.
  
  
• ANALYSIS: Ability to critically evaluate key leadership and management concepts.
  
  
• RESEARCH: Amount of research and range of sources used.
  
  
• REFERENCING: Accuracy of Harvard reference in the text of the report and in the reference list.
  
  
• STRUCTURE AND APPEARANCE: How well the report has been structured and its visual presentation.
  
  
• WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: Spelling, punctuation, grammar, and paragraphing.
  
  
• REFLECTION: Ability to reflect on the effectiveness of personal leadership/management.

Assessment 2 : Group presentation (40%)

Overview  

You are required to record the group presentation and submit the presentation slides on Moodle. The group should consist maximum of 4 (Four) members and five minutes will be given per presenter (+1minute maximum).

You have the freedom to structure your video as you see fit, but it must align with the assessment criteria outlined on page 5 of this document. While we encourage the use of audio-visual and other media to enrich your presentation, remember that clarity and content are paramount. Welldesigned presentation slides that complement your speech effectively may suffice to convey your message.

Additional Information

The team presentation should effectively articulate a clear, engaging, and thoughtful exploration of the topic: “How to be a leader in turbulent times.”

You may focus on:

Transformations in team dynamics within a particular industry, examine leadership strategies in response to unusual situations, investigate the evolving requirements for leadership roles, or delve into the complexities of leadership across different cultures or countries.

The interpretation of “how to be a leader in turbulent times” is left to your discretion

The interpretation and approach to this topic should align with the themes covered in the second part of the module, such as (Transformational Leadership, Authentic Leadership, Servant Leadership, Followership, Gender and Leadership, Leadership Ethics, and Team Leadership).

The presentation must demonstrate relevance and interest by integrating real-world examples of leadership. This could include illustrating how leaders have navigated turbulent times using the principles of Transformational, Authentic, or Servant Leadership, among others. It should be grounded in the recommended resources available under the Resource List on Moodle, ensuring a well-informed and academically rigorous exploration of leadership dynamics in challenging environments.

For instance:

Analyse case studies of leaders navigating cultural differences in global supply chains during the turbulence time.

Submission Details

VIDEO DELIVERY AND DATE  : Your team must be physically present on campus to deliver your group presentation and have the video recorded. Alternative delivery options may be considered at the discretion of the Lecturer/Module Leader.

 VIDEOLENGTH  : Your team’s video should be precisely 5 minutes per team member, with a maximum of 1 additional minute per team member allowed. Each team member must present only the content they have designed. This ensures fair assessment, particularly in teams with varying contributions.

You need to share the video link with your lecturer if when you are selecting Teams or PowerPoint recording. Guidance and practice time will be provided to familiarize yourselves with this approach.

FILE FORMAT: The group presentation slides must be uploaded by each member of group on Moodle in .ppt or .pptx.

TEAM COMPOSITION  : Your team ideally consists of four members. You are encouraged to select your team members primarily from your presentation time slot, with additional members potentially added at the discretion of the Lecturer/Module Leader.

All group members are expected to receive the same mark. However, if there is a significant disparity in contribution or quality, the Lecturer/Module Leader may adjust individual marks at their discretion. It is advisable for your team to maintain a log of meetings (e.g., meeting minutes) and document who designed each section. Keep these records safe until after receiving your marks and feedback, as they may influence decisions regarding individual marks.
