6037BMS Assignment Brief

6037BMS Assignment Task

  • You are required to interpret a case study by evaluating biochemical data and integrating this with clinical symptoms. In some cases, the question will ask you to come to a differential diagnosis, while in others, you will be given a diagnosis and need to use the evidence to justify it. Please read the question carefully to ensure you know what you need to do.
  • This is a time-constrained assessment ie you have TWO weeks in which to answer the question assigned to you. The module leader will post a spreadsheet in the Assessment section on Aula to indicate which case study you should answer – please do NOT attempt to answer a different case study, as you will receive zero marks. Details of the case studies will be uploaded to the Assessment section on Aula on Monday 17 th June.
  • The question will assess your understanding of the biochemistry of a specific disease state and your ability to interpret case studies. The module workshops will teach you how to approach different case studies and indicate the depth of information required in your coursework.
  • Your work should be informed by the learning you have experienced within the taught components of the module, but should be supplemented by reference to relevant published literature (contemporary text books and journal articles). Please do NOT cite lecture or workshop material in your essays. You are advised to use at least 15 suitable references in your work.
  • Your work will be subject to plagiarism checks through Turnitin so you are reminded that you should synthesise information from sources and express this in your own words in your answers.
  • The word limit for this assignment is 1500 words and you should state your word count at the end of your work.

The word count includes the following:

  • The text of your written work
  • Reference citations and references to figures and tables within the text
  • Descriptive paragraphs as Figure or Table legends
  • Narrative text included in Tables

The following are excluded from your word allowance:

  • The title
  • Figure and Table headings
  • Words, sequences and numbers associated with figures and tables (however, extensive narrative text presented in Tables will count – see above)
  • Reference list
  • The word count details

Submission Instructions:

Your work should be submitted to the Resit or Deferral CW1 July 2024 (Resit/Deferral) Turnitin link on the module Aula page.

Please submit your work in a Microsoft Word format.

Academic staff will not be responsible for removing submissions that are made in error. Therefore, please take care in checking your submission before uploading to the final assessment submission link. You may submit multiple times to the final assessment link, but do remember that obtaining a similarity report may take up to 24 hours, and this should not be attempted close to the deadline. You may also utilise the draft link in the community pages for checking your similarity scores before the deadline.

The Turnitin UK system will record the date and time of your submission and cannot be over-written.

If you experience any technical problems when trying to submit your work, please consult Aula help via the question mark link. If these problems are experienced at the time of the submission deadline and cannot be quickly resolved, please capture screenshots as evidence and email these and your completed assessment to the module leader as soon as possible.

As this assessment is time-constrained, extensions to the deadline are NOT permitted.

  • Apply understanding of biochemical and physiological mechanisms to explain the laboratory investigations of biochemical and endocrine parameters, including regard for quality control and quality assurance.
  • Explain, interpret, and critically evaluate laboratory data in patient-based case studies and other problem-based scenarios in clinical biochemistry and immunology.

Assignment Support and Academic Integrity

If you have any questions about this assignment, please see the Student Guidance on Coursework for more information.

Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar:

You are expected to use effective, accurate, and appropriate language within this assessment task.

Academic Integrity:

The work you submit must be your own, or in the case of group work, that of your group. Biochemical abnormalities

Weighting: 40%

Evaluation

Weighting: 30%

82, 85, 88, 90, 95, 100

An outstanding interpretation of a case study. Extensive links between analyte levels and pathophysiology/ patient symptoms. Outstanding appreciation of biochemical tests.

An excellent selection of peer-reviewed articles has been used to support an outstanding evaluation of the data. An excellent attempt at differential diagnosis.

72, 75, 78

An excellent understanding of the biochemical basis of disease states. Analyte levels are clearly linked to pathophysiology and clinical symptoms. Biochemical tests are clearly understood.

Information is taken from a wide array of peer-reviewed source(s). Evidence of good level of evaluation and careful selection of relevant supportive information. A logical differential diagnosis.

62, 65, 68

A very good attempt has been made to relate the biochemical findings to the pathophysiology of the disease in question and the clinical information provided, but finer detail may be lacking. A good explanation of the biochemical tests has been provided, but some detail may be missing.

Information is taken from source(s) to support a good evaluation and a coherent answer. Addresses the question directly with a selection of supportive material. There is a good attempt at differential diagnosis, but some detail may be missing

52, 55, 58

A reasonable attempt has been made to relate the biochemical findings to disease pathophysiology, but scientific details may be missing or information may be inaccurate. Some explanation relating the biochemical findings to the clinical presentation is provided. There is some understanding of the biochemical tests involved, but the explanation is lacking in detail.

There is some evidence of interpretation/ evaluation, but insufficient focus on the particular question and insufficient detail to answer the question fully. Differential diagnosis has been attempted, but needs to be more extensive.

42, 45, 48

Some attempt has been made to link the biochemical findings to the clinical symptoms or to the pathophysiology of the disease in question, but there are several omissions or errors in key facts. Information provided on the biochemical tests may be lacking in scientific accuracy or may not be appropriate to the disease

Information is taken from source(s) without any interpretation/evaluation. Some of the sources may be unsuitable at this level. Errors and gaps with insufficient detail to answer the question. A sensible diagnosis has been reached, but there is little consideration of alternatives.

Fail

30, 35%

Limited understanding is shown of the biochemical test results. The analyte levels are not appropriately linked with disease pathology or clinical findings. Explanations lack scientific detail or clarity.

Inadequate selection of material to address the question; lacking in detail and accuracy. Information may be taken only from lecture notes and teaching material. The diagnosis does not fit with the data provided.

Fail
0 to 29%

Little or no relevant information on biochemical abnormalities. Errors in the interpretation of test results. Little or no attempt to link analyte levels with appropriate disease pathology. The information provided is too simplistic for Level 6.

Little or no attempt to support the case study interpretation with scientific evidence. Diagnosis is not made or does not fit with data provided.
