The first 7 weeks (w/c 25.09.23 – 03.11.23) of the module will be conducted in semester one, in addition to preliminary meetings with your dissertation supervisor. The remaining sessions will be conducted in semester two (w/c 22.05.23 – 24.06.23) in addition to meetings with your dissertation supervisor.

The assignment is graded on a 0-100 (percentage) marking scale. Assessors grade the work by making a holistic judgement of the work submitted, i.e. the mark may be more or less than the sum of the individual assessment criteria.

Criteria for assessment

Introduction:

· Critically appraise the scientific body of knowledge surrounding your research project and construct a rationale to clearly justify the reasons for undertaking the review.

· Demonstrate the relevance to sport & exercise therapy practice.

· Precisely state your research aim/s & objectives.

Methods:

· Accurately detail and justify both the methodological approach and methods used in your research project.

· Demonstrate reliability, validity and rigor in the procedures used.

· Ethically consider the quality and relevance of evidence reported in primary research reports with respect to the review purpose.

Results (Findings):

· Appropriately analyse and present the findings from your research project using a format relevant to your type of review.

Discussion:

· Discuss the principal findings of your research project and critically evaluate their meaning in relation to current published literature.

· Provide clinically relevant debate considering the methodological strengths and limitations to draw appropriate conclusions in a critically reflective style.

Presentation:

· Provide an abstract that accurately and succinctly summarises your research project and its findings.

· Structure, grammar, spelling, referencing & supplementary files.

Feedback on Your Assessments

Feedback forms a large part of your learning experience and is vital to your personal and professional development. Whatever your academic level, building on your feedback is vital. Noting and acting on feedback is key to independent learning, continued progress and long-term success.

Formative feedback will be exchanged during the timetabled workshops and via group and individual tutorials with your research supervisor.

Summative feedback will be available to students following grading and moderation by the staff team.

Understanding Your Assessment Responsibilities

Extenuating Circumstances and Mitigation

If you are experiencing problems which are adversely affecting your ability to study (called 'extenuating circumstances'), then you can apply for mitigation.

The University operates a fit to sit/fit to submit approach to extenuating circumstances which means students who take their assessment are declaring themselves fit to do so.

Late Submission

Without any form of extenuating circumstances, standard penalties apply for late submission of assessed work. Details of the penalties for late submission of course work are available in the Academic Regulations.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a fundamental principle within the University and is strongly linked to good academic practice. All assessments must be submitted with due attention to issues of academic integrity, expression, and good academic practice, including clarity in grammar, semantics and syntax.

All dissertations/research projects require research ethics approval and you must submit your ethical approval notification with your assignment for the assessment to be marked. This includes assignments such as literature reviews using information in the public domain that are approved by research supervisors (risk category one projects).

You must follow the guidance provided on your module regarding obtaining ethical approval and it is your responsibility to ensure you have received ethical approval evidence prior to any data collection.

Our Academic Integrity Regulations also apply to academic integrity breaches and unfair practices related to research ethics and dissertations including, but not limited to, the following:

Non-compliance with the University’s Research Ethics Policy and Research Ethics Procedures;

A mid-module review will be timetabled into your module by week 7. This is an opportunity to resolve modular issues promptly early on in the module.
