TO5004 Sustainable Tourism Development Assessment

ASSESSMENT ITEM 1: DESCRIPTION 

This assessment is focussed on the Marine Tourism Sustainability field trip. Students should analyse and  write a 1500-2000 word (not including references, tables or figures) case study on this marine tourism  experience operation that includes discussion of  
- how its operations might impact negatively on the various forms of capital that make up wellbeing and that can detract from the sustainability of the tourist experience being offered, 
- the sustainability strategies currently in place, 
- challenges faced by the tourist experience managers in improving its sustainability, and 
- suggestion for further changes that could be made to improve the sustainability of the tourist experience offered. 

ASSESSMENT ITEM 2: DESCRIPTION 

This assessment is focussed on the Atherton Tablelands field trip and focusses on critically examining  the potential for tourism to be used a sustainable community and/or regional development tool. This  field trip includes discussion of protected area tourism, Indigenous tourism and Food/Agritourism.  Students should select one of these topics and complete a 2000-2500 word report that critically  examines how their chosen type of tourism is currently being used for sustainable development.

ASSESSMENT ITEM 3: DESCRIPTION 

This assessment focusses on how tourism can be used as tool for sustainability beyond tourism and  student can use information gathered from the Indigenous tourism experiences or the rainforest  protected area experiences, they encountered in both the Atherton Tablelands and Daintree field trips.  In either case students should explore how sustainability communication or heritage interpretation can  be used to encourage tourists to change their views and/or actions about sustainability when they  return home.

• describe and appraise core strategies for improving tourism sustainability 
• critically analyze the use of tourism as a sustainable destination community development strategy 
• develop and communicate appropriate planning and policy instruments to enhance tourism  effectiveness for improving community wellbeing
