Academic Year 2023-24 Semester 1

Assessment Brief:

This brief applies to students on the Dental Technology pathway. Your pathway lead for PORT2 will be Edward Mapley, and questions related to PORT2 should be emailed to emapley@cardiffmet.ac.uk

We have prepared a template for you to complete for this Assessment. The template has three sections and can be found in the Dental Technology PID1 Pathway. Because this Assessment relates to your inter-professional Seminar sessions, your attendance is compulsory and necessary to complete
it. Attendance will be monitored via registration at the beginning of each session.

Section 1: Video Log (Vlog) 3-5 minutes.

Dental technicians are expected to be competent communicators using various techniques. Record a 3 to 5-minute Vlog on the role of the dental technician within the dental and interprofessional team. The Vlog should be a straightforward "talking head" video; however, you may use a script, props or a presentation if this helps. Once you have recorded your Vlog, please link it in the Portfolio Template in the space provided. Technical guidance will be provided in the pathway sessions, and we can provide additional technical support and facilities upon request and arrange to speak with the module lead.

Section 2: Reflections on Group Poster and Professionalism (1000 words).

During this module, you worked as part of a multidisciplinary team to explore services for a fictitious family and create a poster. This activity required you to develop your professional voice, take a team approach and display communication skills. Summarise your experiences and feelings towards this
activity, then evaluate and analyse them within the professional context of the following two documents:

  •  General Dental Council Standards for the Dental Team.
  •  GDC Student Professionalism and Fitness to Practice.

Depending on your experience or the subject of your poster, you might also utilise other GDC guidance, such as the Duty of Candor or Principles for Complaint Handling, etc. Finally, conclude and explain what you would do differently next time.

When referring to the Standards for the Dental Team, do not paste in the entire standard but use the number and integrate it into your sentence construction, e.g. "This event made me think of standard 6.5 because this communication with colleagues was clear and allowed us to achieve our deadline
effectively".

Structure your reflections using the headings from the Gibbs model of reflection (1988); the prompt questions are suggestions only:

  • Description: What happened, what did you do, and how much did you contribute? Were there areas of conflict or disagreement? Were you able to attend all the scheduled seminar sessions?
  • Feelings: Your feelings and reactions. How did you feel working with your team, and has this changed your feelings toward the dental or interprofessional team? What encouraged you or held you back? Do you feel you developed your professional voice during discussions? How do you feel about your behaviour? What are your feelings towards the General Dental Council and
its guidance concerning where it relates to your experiences?
  • Evaluation: What were the barriers and facilitators to working within your group? What was the impact of your contribution? Who and what worked well and what did not work? Were you able to apply behaviours from Standards for the Dental Team and Student Professionalism and Fitness to practice?
  • Analysis: Make sense of the situation within the professional context of General Dental Council Standards for the Dental Team and Student Professionalism and Fitness to practice. Relate selected GDC standards to your experiences and discuss selected elements of student fitness to practice.
  • Conclusion: What have you learned? What have you learned about yourself and teamwork as an experience? Can you relate this to your previous experience? What are you going to do differently next time? What skills might you need to develop? How will you develop these skills? How will you improve your professionalism?

Good responses balance each part of Gibbs's model of reflection across the reflection, although there is no strict word count relating to how long each should be. The most current copies of Standards for the Dental Team and Student Professionalism and Fitness to Practice and other guidance are
available from the General Dental Council website.

Section 3: Risk Assessment (500 words).

During your practical sessions, you will have constructed dental devices concurrent with this module. Dental Technicians must be able to assess risk in their environment to protect themselves and others. We will provide you with a risk assessment template divided into three parts. Select a dental technology process you have carried out associated with constructing a dental device, e.g. occlusal rim, special tray, thermoformed splint, repair, reline, wax try-in or denture processing. Then, complete the risk assessment template form following the instructions provided within the form.
