Marking Criteria

A patchwork text rubric will be used to assess your work. We encourage you to check the marking criteria (still to add link for 2025/26) on Moodle.

Assessment Success Guidance

Task 1

You should first outline the findings of the study and then discuss any key strengths and weaknesses.

  • The findings of the study are reported within the results section of the journal article. A summary of the findings also usually appears within the discussion section and briefly within the abstract. You should identify these findings and outline them in your own words. There is no set word limit for this, but it should be achievable within ~200 words. Try to describe these findings in the context of the main aims / hypotheses of the study.
  • You are then required to discuss any strengths and weaknesses of the study (~800 words). A balanced approach to the time spent on each should work well. The authors themselves consider some strengths and shortcomings of their study within the discussion section, and so you could briefly refer to these in a way that clearly indicates your understanding of these points. You should also identify strengths and/or weaknesses of the study that have not been considered within the target article, which, if logical and justifiable, will show evidence of independent critical thinking and/or engagement with a wider literature. Some of the seminars within the Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience module are designed to aid your critical analysis skills in this regard. In these sessions, we will focus on some of the strengths and weaknesses of different journal articles. Critical analysis resources can also be found on Moodle.
  • Please include a reference list at the end (this will be excluded from the word count).

Task 2

  • Please include a reference list at the end (this will be excluded from the word count).
  • Please make use of the essay writing resources on Moodle. Each title addresses a different lecture topic from across the module. Please engage deeply with the materials and resources from the lecture topic that you have selected for your essay.
  • For the essay, if you have concerns about how to write an introduction, how to smoothly connect your ideas, how to critically evaluate or write a conclusion, please see Dickerson (2021) How to write brilliant essays, which has a chapter on each of these issues and is available online via the Talis link. You may find the support links on the right side of every Moodle page helpful including the Online Study Skills Hub: Home - Online Study Skills Hub - Library Home at University of Roehampton. You may also find some video guides that were created for Sage are helpful, you can find these here.

To achieve maximum success in the task, aim to produce:

  • An excellent analysis, synthesis and evaluation of material
  • An original and insightful approach
  • A full understanding of all material covered
  • A correct length, excellent written style, organisation and presentation
  • Logical argument
  • A comprehensive range of current views and research (Essay only)
  • A sophisticated critical evaluation of the research study (Research paper only) Please use the following online resources to support your assessment completion:
