NURS3101 Challenges and Complexity in Adult Nursing Assessment Guide

Intended learning outcomes to be achieved

1. Debate the challenges facing adult service users and their families/carers with complex and challenging health and social care needs; 
2. Critically explore the nurse's professional role in managing, coordinating and evaluating complex, diverse and challenging care situations 
3. Critically explore collaborative working across the contemporary and integrated health and social care environments;
4. Appraise and apply evidence, including policy and legislation to inform clinical decision-making and safe, effective healthcare.

NURS3101 Aim of the assessment

For the individual presentation, you need to analyse the needs of a service user and their carers/family with complex needs and the role of the adult nurse and wider inter-professional team, in meeting the nursing and care needs of the service user and their carers/ family.

Demonstrating an understanding of the use of evidence, healthcare resources and policies to deliver person-centred care, and identifying and evaluating clinical decision-making in complex and challenging situations.

NURS3101 Marking criteria

Pass mark for the assessment item 8/ D-.  

How the work will be marked 
Provide a link to the appropriate School marking rubric
Provide an indication of how further feedback will be provided e.g.,  

  • 3 strengths/things done well
  • 3 weaknesses/things for improvement and why
  • 3 targets for development in future assignments

Following the release of grades and feedback if the student has any queries on the outcome or feedback. The student should contact the first marker at the first instance. Also, reassessment support will be organised and communicated by blackboard announcements. 

Standardisation, verification and moderation

Your assessment are verified internally before being published.   If your assessment is also verified by the external examiner.

Your module team will complete a standardisation task before marking begins. This involves all markers independently marking a sample of student work and assigning a grade using the agreed criteria and then comparing and discussing the outcomes to confirm an agreed grade. 

Once marking is complete, internal moderation takes place.  This usually involves members of the marking team sampling a range of work.  The focus is on moderating work at the pass/fail boundary, with all E-grade work and a sample of D- work being moderated. A range of work from other grades is also moderated including moderation of F grade work.

The university requires approximately 10% of assessments to be moderated and all moderation is recorded on a university moderation report.  Following internal moderation, assessments are shared with an external examiner.  The external examiner does not mark the work or change the grades awarded, they confirm if marking and moderation were robust and if the work is of an appropriate academic standard, with consistency between markers.

Late submissions and mitigating circumstances

Outline late submission and MC – See below:

You are expected to submit all assignments by the due date.  

If you submit coursework late but within 7 days (one week) of the due date your work will be marked but the grade will be capped at D- (recorded as L1 grade).  All assignments submitted later than 7 days (one week) will not be marked and a grade L2 will be recorded. 

If you have mitigating circumstances preventing you from meeting the due date you should submit a claim within 7 days of the due date which is 21.12.2023.  You will be expected to provide evidence to support the claim which covers the period immediately leading up to the assessment. 

PLEASE NOTE:  

  • You must submit and pass all items of assessment for a module in order to pass the module. 
  • If you do not submit an item of assessment, you will automatically fail the module regardless of any overall mark achieved.  
  • If you achieve an H or L2 grade, you will automatically fail the module regardless of any overall mark achieved. 

A transcript of results will be available on-line via your Student Homepage once marks have been agreed. To view your results, click on the ‘My Results’ Tab when using your SOLE page.

Provisional results published

Provisional results (grades) will be published on SOLE and feedback will be released on BB summative Panopto video presentation portal within 20 working days from the date of submission which is 22.01.2024.   All results are ratified at the exam board.

Reassessment date

The reassessment period and the date will be confirmed by the examination board. The students requiring reassessment will be supported by the first marker and face-face tutorials will be organised by the module team to support reassessment.

Reassessment information

Where you fail both the original assessment and the reassessment, you will have the right to retake that module once during the next academic year.

You are not permitted to retake modules containing a practice-based assessment, a fail at a practice module at reassessment you will be discontinued.  

Reassessment work must be submitted on time. Late submission does not apply to any reassessments, as the grade for the work is already capped.
