2.1 Module Summary 

  • The module introduces you to some of the methods and techniques used in carrying out an inquiry into different sectors.
  • Research impacts our daily lives; people now enjoy things not possible a few years ago.  Research is a way to understand and act on complexities of various issues people or businesses are facing. Research results in predictions, theories and many principles and this way it comes up with conclusions.
  • A student-initiated and student-conducted research project is undertaken with the intent to get deep into the chosen topic, contribute knowledge in the chosen field/subject and improve student’s academic performance. Understanding the role of research further helps in the decision-making process required of managers in any industry. 
  • This module provides an opportunity to establish or advance your understanding of research through critical exploration of a wide range of research-related topics including research methodology, research design, data collection and analysis, research integrity and responsibility. 

2.2 Module Aim and Learning Outcomes 

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a research idea into a professional research proposal. Students will also understand the importance of research ethics and the wider impact of research. 
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: 

  • Contrast issues that lend themselves to purposeful research from issues of interest.
  • Critically evaluate different research strategies, methodologies and approaches in relation to a chosen research objective. 
  • Uphold the highest of ethical standards in the conduct of research 
  • Demonstrate ability to plan a structured research project and to improve the plan based on critical feedback.  Appreciate the wider impact of research and interest to relevant stakeholders.

2.3 Module content  

The module will cover the following topics 

  • Understanding commonly used terminologies in critical research for the chosen sector
  • Understanding competitive intelligence within specific sectors 
  •  Presentation and discussion on the chosen sector  
  • Managerial Decision-making and Research 
  • Inquiry Research Case Studies 
  • Identifying literature Review and inquiry area related to the chosen sector • Use of Primary and Secondary data affecting the chosen sector 
  • Elements of Research Design for the critical inquiry 
  • Qualitative and Quantitative Approach in critical inquiry 
  • Measurement of Variables: operational definition and scales  
  • Data collection methods and ethics for research 
  • Introduction to critical analysis 
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation 
  • proposal writing up (Drop-in –session) 

Independent learning includes time engaged with essential and further reading materials, revision,  research activity, case study and assignment preparation and completion, critically reflection on own  experience and advanced topics and applicability to real-world settings. These are done prior to the live  webinar called ‘establishing basic knowledge’ and after the live webinar called ‘consolidation’
