Assessment Information

This section should be read in conjunction with the Master in Clinical Research Programme Handbook where students will find procedural information relating to assessment. Submission of the assessment is via the Moodle site, guidance on submission can be found within the programme handbook.

The assessment consists of formative and summative elements. The summative element consists of one component, a written (qualitative research) report.

Assessment for this module is assessed at M level and the assessment criteria can be found in the programme handbook. Assessment on this module involves reflection and synthesis of information from attended sessions therefore attendance is an integral part of this module.

Assessed Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:

  1. Define the theoretical backgrounds and ethical principles of qualitative research methods.
  2. Motivate qualitative techniques and data collection methods related to research questions.
  3. Perform qualitative data collection techniques and fieldwork.
  4. Critically analyse qualitative data using computerised data management packages.
  5. Present qualitative research findings and translate the findings into clinical practice.

Formative Assessment

The students will be provided with examples of qualitative data for analysis, which can then be discussed with the group members. These will enable the students to explore a variety of different data presentation approaches. Alternatively, the students can use narratives of public available blogs or websites to use these as qualitive data and perform qualitative data analysis

Summative Assessment

  • A qualitative project report (for example a PPIE consultation, qualitative systematic review, qualitative study, etc) in the format of a manuscript for publication (4000 words; +/- 10%).
    or
  •  Written assessment of a qualitative research question including one qualitative data collection technique (interviews or focus groups or observations or public available narratives from blogs and websites, etc), the analysis of qualitative data and the written presentation of the finding including the impact on clinical practice and society. (4000 words; +/- 10%).
