Weighting within module

This assessment is worth 30% of your overall module mark.

Assessment task details and instructions

There are two tasks for this assessment:

Task 1: You will need to record a 20-minute video addressing questions related to the case study scenario provided (Amazon).

Task 2: You will need to upload a personal development plan (PDP) relating to your own leadership development needs into Turnitin. [A suggested template PDP will be provided, but students can also develop their own].

Task 1

You should firstly look at the case scenario on Amazon provided on Blackboard in the assessment area and then prepare verbal answers to the questions set out below. You will record your answers to these questions, by the due date, via a video link (Hire Vue) that will be sent to you during the module delivery.

Your answers should reference theory and evidence and will adopt the use of a critical analysis approach. You are required to engage with peer review journal articles when citing your work during the video presentation responses (further instruction will be provided during the sessions).

Note, part of this exercise is to assess your presentation and influencing style as a leader. As such, you are expected to present directly to camera, without looking at notes.

Your recording should be of 20 minutes in length, will be delivered through Modern Hire spilt into two response deliveries (15 minutes presentation - Qs1-4; 5 minutes presentation (Q 5).

A total of 100 marks are available, split across the 5 questions below to be addressed as video presentation responses, with 5 marks also available for your presentation/influencing style:

1. Identify the business issues that Amazon faces, critically discussing why the stated issues are problematic leadership issues? (20 marks).

2. The case highlights Jeff Bezos’s transformational leadership approach, but also a company culture that subscribes to autocratic leadership.  Considering the challenges highlighted in your previous response critically discuss, an alternative leadership approach more suitable for Amazon? (20 marks).

3. There is some evidence in the case study regarding Jeff Bezos’s communication approach. How might Jeff Bezos as leader, have better communicated the need to sustain innovation in Amazon given its business challenges and further it’s global context? Critically discuss your suggestions. (20 marks).

4. Given that Amazon is a global business, what advice would you offer Jeff Bezos as to how he might have developed the leadership skills of its employees, beyond the practices evident in the Case Study and in light of the business challenges Amazon faces?  [you should consider different leadership development interventions and approaches that Bezos may have adopted and the different groups of people likely to require development, depending on factors such as for example diverse cultural backgrounds] (20 marks).

5. In the last 2 to 3 minutes of the video, please reflect based on the module CIPD knowledge and behaviours what your own leadership development priorities/needs are over the next 2 years. Reflect on a minimum of three Leadership capabilities (15 marks).

Task Two

Note: You will need to also upload a personal development plan (PDP) into Turnitin, so what you state on video should reflect what is included within your plan. The PDP will also be uploaded onto Turn-it In, by the deadline date stated on this assessment brief.

The following criteria are required for the Personal Development Plan.

1. Students are required to complete the personal development Plan which requires students to formulate SMART goals in table format.

2. You are required to choose three leadership capabilities linked to your learning on this module.

3. In column one students are required to:

- Using a reflective writing style when identifying the leadership capability to demonstrate and justify the identified leadership capability.

- You are also required to map the identified leadership capability with CIPD ILOs highlighted in the CIPD mappings posted on Blackboard.

- It will also be useful to link your reflections to previous /current job role and/or future focused career aspirations.

4. Please ensure that your Personal development plan is more than 500 words.

The marks for the Personal Development Plan will be incorporated with the marks allocated towards your response to Q5 in the presentation (15 marks).

Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools

Students will not be expected to use AI in the delivery of the assessment responses, although it is a given that students will use AI technologies during their academic studies, and during this module to support their learning.

For this assessment you may use tools, software, or features of software which use artificial intelligence to generate content such as text or images, in an assistive and supportive capacity.

This means you may use the tool to explore the topic and learning on the module. However, the final work you submit must be your own. Use of AI to generate content to misrepresent your own abilities or mislead your assessor is academic misconduct. When using AI tools, please use University provided tools within the requirements of the University's ICT Acceptable Use Policy, and do not upload sensitive or personal information.

Students should note that it is expected that they are able to demonstrate ability to apply a critical analysis approach in the delivery of each of the question responses around the case study, using the theoretical perspectives presented during the module. Such critical analysis will not be achieved through the use of AI. For each of the responses students will apply their learning on the module to the case study following a critical and comparative analysis of theoretical frameworks and models and further the critical assessment of associated strengths and weaknesses.

Word count/ duration (if applicable)

Your assessment should be of 20 minutes length (video).

The first 4 questions will be delivered in 15 minutes while you will be allocated 5 minutes to complete question 5.

Your personal development plan should include a least 3 key development needs, with a plan as to how these will be addressed. Your personal development plan will be produced in table format and will be more than 500 words.

You will lose marks if your PDP is less than 500 words. There is however no maximum word count limit, though you will of course be expected to use your own judgment in the word count that you allocate to the reflections produced around each of the leadership capabilities addressed.

You are required to align the chosen competencies with the CIPD criteria provided.

How to submit

For coursework assessments only: students with a Reasonable Adjustment Plan (RAP) or Carer Support Plan should check your plan to see if an extension to this submission date has been agreed.

For Task One, you will be sent a link during the module, where you will be able to record your answers to the questions on the assessment brief, as set out below. You will be provided instruction during the module delivery on the Hire Vue system.

For Task Two You should submit in the Turnitin Submission area on Blackboard.

Please ensure that you include your student roll number and your name on your submission of Task Two onto BB, as this is the area that you will receive feedback for both Task One and Task Two.

Feedback

You can expect to receive feedback by 15 working days after the submission deadline (tbc).

You can expect to receive feedback by tbc.

Formative feedback to help you prepare for the assessment will be available as part of the seminar sessions, when students will have the opportunity to also work on activities which will enable students to develop their understanding of leadership concepts learnt on the module.
