Module Aims

The purpose of this module is to introduce the student to current trends in the development of music, arts and other festivals as well as the specific issues faced by festival organisers in the delivery of these events.

Module Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students will be able to:

1. Distinguish and categorise different types and structures of festivals.

2. Assess alternative approaches and issues in managing festivals and festival organisations.

3. Apply digital technologies to the marketing and management of festival events.

4. Evaluate and apply methods of engaging and involving audiences at festivals.

Module Learning Activities

Content will, as appropriate, be drawn from:

• The Festival Experience – Freedom, Authenticity, Belonging and Transcendence 

• Festival Programming – Creativity, competition and added values 

• The Festival Business 

• The Festival Terrain – Industry structure (independent & corporate) 

• Issues in Festival Management – Sustainability

• Issues in Festival Management – Drug Harm Reduction

• Issues in Festival Management – Inclusion, Diversity and Safe Spaces

The indicative learning activities students will undertake are:

• A programme of lectures that will introduce key theories and concepts.

• Seminars that will develop and contextualise the theory and will allow the application of theory to practice.

Students will be expected to undertake supplementary reading, gathered from their own searches and directed by tutors, to prepare for tutorial activities as indicated in the scheme of work. Student attendance is imperative as ongoing formative feedback will be given by tutors during classroom activities. This will be used as one means of supporting the learning process.
