Purpose

This course introduces students to the aging process and how it affects one’s lifestyle and wellbeing over time and covers the support requirements for caring for the aged in palliative care and signs of abuse and appropriate responses.

Learning Outcomes:1

LO1: Describe the aging process and its impact on daily life and appropriate health support for people of different cultures. (5 Credits). 

To pass the assessment, you must meet all the stated learning outcomes (LOs) and must achieve 50% marks in tasks addressing the LOs.

Assessment Guidelines

  • You need to complete every task to a competent standard to pass this assessment.

  • The assessment must be completed according to the school’s policies on assessments.

  • The assessment will be completed and submitted online on Canvas.

  • Note the assessment must be your own individual work. 

  • You are encouraged to use your own class notes or any other relevant material to help guide you in your responses and you are required to write in your own words. 

English Writing and Layout Requirements 

  • Your written work is to be typed out in a Word document. 

  • Aim for your submission to be grammar and spelling error-free. 

  • You need to format your work in the following way: 

  • Font Style: either Calibri or Times New Roman 

  • Font size: not less than 12pt for main content, and no more than 18pt for section headings. 

  • Line Spacing: 1.5 lines 

  • Margins: leave margins of 2.54cm all around the page. 

  • Include Your student ID, Course Number, Cohort Number, and date of submission in the “header” of all pages . 

  • Insert page numbers into the “footer” of all pages.

Case Study

Mrs. Shin is an 82-year-old Asian female who lives in a local aged care facility. She has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, hypertension, arthritis, osteoporosis and diabetes. Recently, she appeared to have lost interest in eating and frequently complained of indigestion. She also wants to be covered with blanket even when weather is warm. She was previously outgoing and social, but lately she has been limiting her outside activities. Although she requires minimal assistance with her activities of daily living (toileting, showering, personal hygiene) and remains ambulatory with a cane, she demands someone to be there to help her. It is also noticed that she has become more confused and gets agitated when she is unable to recall events.
